Age 69, of Shadyside, passed away after a long battle with leukemia on Thursday, October 25, 2018, at UPMC Shadyside. Ken was born on February 5, 1949, in Natrona Heights, to the late Andrew and Mary (Staricek) Stanko. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his stepfather, Edward J. Sakala, his brother, Ronald T Stanko, MD, and his sister-in-law, Donna (Manconi) Stanko.

He is survived by his former wife, Ann (Muscarella) Keeley, their children, Zachary Stanko and Lara Stanko (Dan), his brother, Bruce E Stanko, his brother & sister-in-law, Larry and Shirley Muscarella, sisters-in-law, Rita Ann Stanko and Janet Brand, nephews Andrew, Matthew and Mario, nieces Brooke and Lauren, and several Godchildren. Ken graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with his Bachelors Degree and then with his Medical Degree in 1977. He completed a medical residency at St. Francis Hospital, Pittsburgh, followed by a residency in Adult Psychiatry at The Institute of Living, Hartford, CT.

He returned to Pittsburgh and completed a further residency in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry in 1984 at Western Psychiatric Hospital. His private practice was in Shadyside until 2017. Ken was a caring son for his mother and stepfather, a loving father and compassionate physician.

He was an avid fan of both Pirates and Steelers, spent many years coaching Little League and girl’s softball, and watching girl’s basketball. Ken enjoyed hiking, bird watching, music both classical and rock, and bicycling. His road bike was a faithful companion for exercise and long-distance rides for charity and with friends.

A Christian Funeral Mass will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 17, 2018, at St Scholastica Church, 309 Brilliant Avenue, Aspinwall, Entombment will be private at Our Lady of Hope Cemetery, Tarentum. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his name to UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, 5150 Centre Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15232. The family would like to express their appreciation and sincere thanks to the oncology physicians, nurses and staff at UPMC Hillman.
