Obituary LaNell Helen Speer December 24, 1940 – May 24, 2019 LaNell Helen (Troppy) Speer was born on December 24, 1940, in Raymondville, Texas. She was the youngest of twelve children born to Anton and Annie (Steinberger) Troppy, and spent her younger years helping out on the family cotton and fruit farm, often in early mornings before heading off to school. After graduating high school, she moved to San Antonio with her sister and was employed as a secretary at several insurance companies, the Express News, and the City of San Antonio’s purchasing department.
In 1968, she met Richard Wayne Speer and they were married in 1971. LaLa, as she was lovingly called by her family, and her husband Richard had two daughters, Robyn and Tara. In 1981, they purchased 16 acres near Boerne and raised their family there.
She spent most of her life as a homemaker, loving on her family and children, and always ensuring they had an incredible meal. She always put others first and would rarely talk about herself, but had a witty sense of humor that made you know she was a bit of a prankster inside. LaNell passed away unexpectedly but peacefully in her sleep at home on May 25, 2019, at the age of 78, following a long battle with cancer.
She is preceded in death by her parents, and numerous brothers and sisters. LaNell is survived by her husband of almost 50 years, Richard; her daughters, Robyn Hass (Joseph) of Montgomery, Texas, and Tara Blank (Brad) of Vancouver, Washington; her beloved grandchildren, Jarod, Jacob, Helena, Tilly, Jessica, Abigail and Alexis; brothers, Albert Troppy (Linda) and Herman Troppy (Faye), all of Raymondville, TX; sister, Dorothy; and numerous unofficially adopted children, that at one time or another became grafted into the family via her children’s friendships. Funeral services will be held at the historic St. Peter’s Catholic Chapel on Main Street in Boerne, Texas, on Tuesday, June 4, 2019 at 1:00 PM.
Graveside services will be for her husband and children only. In lieu of flowers, and given the small space in the chapel, the family is asking that donations be made to St. Jude charities at www. stjude.org in her name.
