Lee Burdette Daniel passed away at his home on March 2, 2019. He was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Gloria Faith Early Daniel. He is survived by his brother, Carl, of Richmond, Virginia; his son, Tony; his daughter, Dawn; her wife, Christie Smith; and two grandchildren, Jory and Sara.
He was born in Ft. Worth, Texas, the son of a Baptist minister and lecturer, Dr. Robert Thomas Daniel, and Alberta Carl Daniel. He grew up in Wake Forest, North Carolina, where he graduated from Wake Forest High School.
He graduated from Mars Hill College and Oglethorpe University, where he met the love of his life, Gloria. He started his professional career as District Executive of the Boy Scouts of America, Occoneechie Council, North Carolina, where he was the manager of Camp Durant, the largest Boy Scout Camp in the state, as well. He then moved on to begin a career as Training Manager, first with the J.P. Stevens Corporation in Millegeville, Georgia, and on to The Bibb Company in Newnan, Georgia.
He retired from The William L. Bonnell Company as their Training and Safety Coordinator, having started their Adult Learning program to assist employees who had never learn to read. Retirement did not suit him, though. He started his own educational company with his wife, CAP Learning, Inc., a company devoted to instructing foster parents in various topics, from teaching foster parents about working with children with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and Fetal Cocaine Syndrome, to helping abused children find their own place in a new family.
Through this work, he and his wife helped place over 500 foster children in adoptive homes, many of whom stayed in contact with them as they began their own families. Daniel was one of the founding members of the Coweta County Volunteer Fire Department, now known simply as the Coweta County Fire Department. He and 35 other friends and co-workers recognized the need for a fire department outside the city limits of Newnan, so, with initial funding from The Bibb Company, they began their efforts using outdated vehicles and equipment, bringing a safer way of life to homes not serviced by the City of Newnan Fire Department.
He also served on the Coweta County Fire Commission for many years. Along with Tom Corker, the Rev. David Lovelace, and Renee McGraw, he helped organize the first Newnan Can-A-Thon in 1983, for what was then known as the Coweta County Food Pantry.
That organization is now known as the One Roof Ecumenical Alliance, which serves all of Coweta County. He was a devoted member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, seeing it through some 45 years of growth in the community and serving on several committees and as a Vestry member. He was a part of the Outreach group, bringing the Holy Sacraments to those members who were unable to get to church due to illness or hospitalization, and continued to do so until his own illness prevented him from doing so.
His family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Outreach Fund or the Coweta County Firefighter Benevolent School Scholarship Fund. Memorial services will be held on March 23, 2019 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church at 11 AM with The Very Rev. Hazel Smith Glover officiating.
