Obituary for Lenore Patton Hampton – Lenore (Baumritter) Patton, 81, of Hampton, passed away on October 8, 2018 after a short period of home hospice. She was born in Allentown, PA on November 22, 1936, the daughter of Polish Jewish immigrants. She was raised in East New York, Brooklyn, and Plainview and graduated from Hunter High School in 1954 and Hofstra University in 1958.

Lenore married Gary W.R. Patton in 1961. In 1969, the couple and their children moved to Indiana, Pennsylvania, where Gary taught psychology and Lenore earned a master’s degree in public administration at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She went on to found and direct Indiana’s Alice Paul House, a domestic violence and rape crisis center.

In 1997, Lenore and Gary retired to Hampton, New Hampshire. In both Indiana and Hampton, Lenore was a passionate advocate for social and economic justice and especially for women’s issues. She was the first woman on the Indiana, PA School Board and the first woman to chair the Indiana County Democratic Committee.

Lenore later chaired the Rockingham, NH Democratic County Committee, thus serving as a county chair in two different states. Lenore was open and welcoming to international college students from many countries. She and Gary hosted students from Costa Rica, Finland, Turkey, Denmark, Brazil, Argentina, China, the Canary Islands, and Japan.

She is survived by Gary, her husband of 57 years; her brother Bob Baume (Barbara); her children Pamela Patton (Eric White), Dave Patton (Theresa) and her grandchildren Emily Patton White, Evan Patton White, Shannon Patton, and Mark Patton. A memorial service open to the public will be held from 2 to 4 pm on October 20, 2018 at the South Church Unitarian Universalist, 292 State Street, Portsmouth, NH. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you and your friends register and vote on Tuesday, November 6, 2018.
