OBITUARY Lester Gaskins August 14, 1930 – January 1, 2019 Lester Gaskins, 88, of New Bern, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, January 1st, 2019. He served as a mechanic in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, attaining the rank of Sergeant prior to his honorable discharge. Upon returning home, he established Lester Gaskins Auto Service and successfully operated it with his son, Ralph, for fifty years until his retirement in 2007.

He was known for his unique truck collection, including a double-headed Ford Econoline that he built himself. Lester was a retired volunteer firefighter with the New Bern Fire Dept. Button Company.

He was also a member of St. John’s Masonic Lodge, New Bern Scottish Rite, the Sudan Shrine and Sudan Patrol. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Irene Gaskins; his wives, Marilyn Gaskins and Sue Gaskins; and his son, Lester Ralph Gaskins. He is survived by three grandchildren, Johnathon Gaskins (Teri), Brandon Gaskins (Melissa), and Lonni Beth Price (Graham); four great grandchildren, Christopher Gaskins, Ethan Gaskins, Parker Gaskins, and Levi Price; daughter-in-law, Pamela Gaskins; two sisters, Edna Kite (Jerome) and Myrtle Lee DeWitt; stepson, Eddie Forrest; and stepgrandchildren, Chandler Forrest and Tyler Forrest.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday evening at the funeral home. Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Cotten Funeral Chapel with Pastor Lee Kirkman officiating. Burial will follow at New Bern Memorial Cemetery with Masonic Rites and Fireman’s Honors.

The family will be at the home of Johnathon and Teri Gaskins, 6095 HWY 55 West, Cove City. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Craven County Hospice, P.O. Drawer 12610, New Bern, NC 28561 or to the Masonic Home for Children, 600 College Street, Oxford, NC 27565.
