OBITUARY Libbie Levitt Baldwin June 1, 1946 – January 13, 2019 Libbie Rae Levitt Baldwin died very peacefully on January 13, 2019. She is survived by her husband of 47 years Jeffrey W. Baldwin, sons Jason and David Baldwin, grandson Colt Baldwin all of Columbia; her sister Helen Levitt Goldman of Hilton Head Island; her Brother in Law, Andy Baldwin of Santa Anna CA; and numerous cousins, nephews and nieces on both sides of her family. She was pre-deceased by her parents and numerous Aunts and Uncles.
Libbie was born at Old Roper Hospital in Charleston, the eldest daughter of Alex “Lou” and Grace Hyde Levitt on June 1, 1946. Her father and Aunt Theresa Levitch opened The Antique Trading Post on King Street in 1936 and she recalls the wonderful times with them and learning about antiques. Moving to Charlotte when she was 10, she graduated from South Mecklenburg High School.
She enrolled at UNC Greensboro and transferred to and graduated from UNC Chapel Hill in Zoology. Libbie continued her education and graduated from the Medical College of SC in Charleston, as a Medical Technologist(ASCP). She worked at their Enzyme Lab after graduation until marrying Jeff at the Fort Sheraton Hotel in Charleston on May 1, 1971, the last wedding there before it was converted to condominiums.
During Jeff’s career in the Navy, she worked at the Blood Bank of NIH, Bethesda MD, and the Naval Hospital Port Hueneme, CA. She was active in the military communities and enjoyed being a Navy wife. She also worked in many customer service positions, thoroughly enjoying helping people.
Family, friends, cooking, gardening, reading and volunteering filled her days. Libbie was always grateful for the sacrifice and dedication of our Armed Forces and First Responders, and never missed an opportunity to acknowledge their key role in preserving our freedom and safety. As a Task Force Marshall Volunteer, she particularly enjoyed the time spent every three weeks with deploying Navy personnel as they completed their training at Fort Jackson.
She was an member of the BNai Israel Synagogue. Family and friends were always in her thoughts and actions. She will be missed for her concern, guidance and sense of humor and perspective as lives and circumstances developed.
She firmly believed life is for the living and would want everyone to remember her but move on with life since it holds so much for each of you. Her sons and grandson bought a smile to her face with every call or visit as did visiting with friends and family. The family is eternally grateful to the staff of Drs Mason and Schumacher who cared for her over the past 15+ years.
Her last six months were difficult, but made so much more pleasant by the Palmetto Home Health and Right at Home staffs. Her final days at Palmetto Baptist Parkridge were managed superbly by Lexington EMS and the Parkridge ER, ICU and Hospice staffs – our thanks to all. Arrangements are in care of Dunbar Funeral Home, 7600 Woodrow Street, Irmo, where a reception with family and friends will be held on Saturday, January 19, 2019 from 1:00 to 3:00pm.
