Lucille Irene Jess, 99, passed away on Monday, June 4, 2018 in Fremont. She was born at home in Oak Harbor on October 18, 1918, the daughter of the late Emery & Amanda (Smith) Schultz. Lucille married Ervin Jess on November 10, 1939 in Rocky Ridge, and he preceded her in death on February 17, 1978.
Lucille graduated from Salem-Oak Harbor High School in 1936. She had fond memories of running on the track team all four years in high school and she also lettered. Early in her marriage she worked at the Adams grocery store in Port Clinton then later at the J. Weller Company in Oak Harbor until her retirement.
Most importantly, Lucille was a wife, mother, and homemaker who loved her family, especially her grandchildren who meant so much to her and kept her young. She always remembered everyone’s birthday or special occasion with a card. Entertaining her family with special meals and celebrations was always a joy for her.
She was most at home when she was baking cookies and coffee cake and often would have fresh coffee cake for family when they stopped by. Mowing grass and working in her garden kept her busy each summer. Over the years, she put many miles on her car as a volunteer for home delivered meals in the Oak Harbor area.
Lucille was also an avid pinochle player and she and Ervin enjoyed playing cards monthly with 3 other couples for over 40 years. She always had a deck of pinochle cards on hand to get a game started. Lucille is survived by children: Ronald (Helen) Jess, Port Clinton, SueAnn (Ray) Ripa, Lancaster, NY, Donald (Marcia) Jess, Port Clinton.
