Lucy passed peacefully into Jesus’s welcoming arms on December 27, 2018. Lucy Ann Ferrante was born September 21, 1920, daughter of Rafaele and Louisa (DiPietrantonio) Ferrante. She was raised on her beloved Munjoy Hill along with her six brothers.
Lucy graduated from Portland High School Class of 1938. As a young adult during World War II, Lucy worked at Todd-Bath Shipyard in South Portland as a Checker for parts made there for building Liberty Ships. These ships transported life sustaining supplies to Russia, After the War, Lucy worked for Montgomery Ward and W.T. Grants as a buyer for several years.
In 1946, Lucy married Sammy, and together they had a life built on devotion, love, and understanding. In 1949, Judy Ann, their only child was born. While raising her they both had strong values which included their catholic beliefs, love, protection and believed education was important.
Lucy’s natural gift was taking care of others. She looked at it as her life’s work. And one of her proudest roles was taking care of her mom for thirteen years who was confined to a bed in their home.
Her mom was her best friend so being her caretaker was a privilege. While raising her daughter and taking care of her mom, she never had the opportunity to attend college. However because she had a love for travel and while preparing for a trip to Italy in 1983.
Lucy along with her daughter signed up for an italian class at University of Southern Maine. She loved to learn and looked at this as fulfilling a college dream. Lucy was a meticulous lover of gardening.
Her gardens were filled with gorgeous perennials, particularly peonies. She also liked to knit, crochet and cruelwork. In 2001, the Shipyard Memorial was being built, at Bug Light, in South Portland.
Lucy sat with an outreach planner, and shared newspaper memorabilia with her. If you visit the Memorial you will see her name listed as one of the contributors. She never boasted, but silently this was something she was proud to be apart of.
She was predeceased by her husband Sammy. Six brothers Santino, Joseph, Anthony, Constantine, Paul, and Orlando. There were also four siblings who died before Lucy was born.
A set of twins at childbirth in 1917, and Anthony and Lucy who died in 1918, during the influenza epidemic. Surviving are her daughter Judy Ann Ferrante, Two grandchildren, Michele Boudreau, and her husband Peter, Christine Stults and her husband Steven. Three great-grandchildren, Nathan, Ryan and Lila.
Many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Frequent family visitors include sister-in-laws Norma and Florence and nephew Lawrence. We would like to give a very Big Thank You to the 3N Wing Nurses, CNAs, Med Techs, Activities and Doctors of the Barron Center.
There are several of you, and you know who you are, for whom there aren’t enough words, you embraced Lucy with kindness, and treated her as if she was your own family. For that we are grateful. Visiting Hours will be held on Thursday, January 3, 2019 from 4 to 7 PM at A.T. Hutchins Funeral Home, 660 Brighton Ave.
Portland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, January 4, 2019 at St. Peters Catholic Church, 72 Federal Street, Portland. Burial will follow in Old Calvary Cemetery in South Portland.
