OBITUARY Luther Hubert Matthews July 1, 1926 – January 4, 2019 Luther H. “Buster” Matthews, Jr., age 92, was born on July 1, 1926, in Asheville, NC. He was the son of the late Luther H. Matthews, Sr. and Emma Irene Williams Matthews. Mr. Matthews is survived by his wife of 55 years, Patricia Carol Beazley Matthews, siblings; Betty Jo Sullivan and Matt R. Matthews (Sylvia), his children; Janine Matthews (Daryl Hicks), Jo Ann Ross (Bruce), and David Matthews (Sherri), grandchildren; Kristen Wallace Barcellos (Mike), Katelyn Zettlemoyer Beaver (David), Amanda Ross Starnes (Kevin), Morgan Ross Holt (Drew), Dillon Matthews, and Corey Matthews, and great-grandchildren; Grace Barcellos, Gwen Barcellos, Georgia Barcellos, Graelyn Barcellos, Wyatt Beaver, William Starnes, Jacob Starnes, and Chase Holt.

He was preceded in death by siblings; Angeline Lutz, Jimmy H. Matthews (Myra), and Otis Leon Matthews. Mr. Matthews grew up in the Craddock area of Portsmouth, Virginia where he graduated from public school. He served as sergeant in the U.S. Army stationed in Rome, Italy during WWII and was assigned to MMIA (Military Mission to the Italian Army).

Buster was a professional minor league baseball player for five seasons. Mr. Matthews retired after 31 years of service with Suburban Propane as an Assistant Regional Manager. He held management positions in Portsmouth, VA, Rock Hill, SC, and Charlotte, NC.

He was a long-time member of Midwood Baptist Church in Charlotte. The visitation will be held at Forest Lawn West Funeral Home on Thursday, January 10, 2019 at 2:00pm with a service following at 3:00pm. A reception will be held at the Funeral Home following the service.
