Lynn’s Obituary Lynn Orville Uhlenhopp, 88, of Hiawatha, Iowa (formerly of Cedar Falls) left this world and entered into the presence of his Lord on December 23, 2018. Lynn was born in Kesley Iowa on October 20, 1930, to George and Rena Uhlenhopp. He was the oldest of three children.
On March 11, 1940, Lynn accepted the Lord Jesus as his Savior while reading a Bible verse hanging on his bedroom wall, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved”. He was thankful for God’s goodness throughout his life, showing kindness and gentleness to those around him. Lynn graduated from Dumont High School in 1947.
He then attended Iowa State University where he studied chemical engineering. His college time was paused when he was drafted into the army, serving his country in Japan during the Korean Conflict. After the conflict ended, he finished college and then traveled to Venezuela to work in the petroleum industry.
When he returned to Iowa, he purchased a farm near Swisher which had many acres of timber that he enjoyed exploring. He also began working in the lab at Penick and Ford. On March 3, 1962, Lynn was united in marriage to Sharon Pike in Aplington, Iowa.
Lynn loved farming and farm equipment and was excited when opportunity arose to work at John Deere. Lynn and Sharon moved to the Cedar Falls area and lived most of their married life there. In addition to being a chemical engineer, Lynn raised cattle and sheep and enjoyed implementing conservation measures on his farmland.
Lynn always had a great desire for learning and was extremely diligent to give his best effort in all that he attempted. Family was also very important to Lynn. He loved learning about family history and visiting relatives.
He was a devoted husband and father and took great interest in his grandchildren. He enjoyed showing them army marches, playing games, and taking them on drives through the countryside. Lynn and Sharon were happily married for 53 years.
Lynn‘s health began to decline in 2010, and Sharon became his caregiver. They moved to Cedar Rapids in 2013 to be closer to their children. Sharon continued to show her devotion to Lynn until she passed away in July 2015.
Lynn was a resident of the Hiawatha Care Center for four years prior to his death, and his family is thankful for the loving care he received there. Lynn is lovingly remembered by his children, Carl (Patti) Uhlenhopp of Marion, Susan (Steve) Knapp of Lisbon, and Cathy (Doug) Williams of Sac City; seven grandchildren, Nathan, Caitlin and Michael Uhlenhopp, Matthew (Lauren), Mia and Micah Knapp, and Linsey Williams; and four great-grandchildren, Emma, Ellie, Ethan and “baby” Knapp. He is also fondly remembered by his brother Lyle (Dotta) Uhlenhopp, his sister Norma (Tilfred) Rierson and many in-laws and extended family members.
Lynn was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Sharon. Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, January 3, 2019, at Hitesville Gospel Hall, with burial in Hitesville Cemetery both rural Aplington. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 2, 2019, at Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel in Aplington, (319)346-1534, and one hour before services at the church.
