Irmo – Mae Lynch Crouch, 94, died Saturday, September 1, 2018, at Wellmore in Lexington, South Carolina. Born Rosa Mae Hook on July 11, 1924, in Irmo, she was a daughter of John Wylie Hook and Rosa Mae Meetze Hook, both of whom preceded her in death. Twice widowed, Mae was also preceded in death by husbands, William Charlton Lynch, Jr. of Edgefield and Irmo and Edwin (Ebbie) Cathcart Crouch of Batesburg, and her sister Helen Estelle Hook Younginer.

Mae is survived by her two sons, Thomas Stephen (Steve) Lynch and his wife Bonnie and William (Billy) Charles Lynch and his wife Paula, and two grandsons, Stephen Hoyt Lynch and William Harris Lynch. Valedictorian of the Irmo High School Class of 1941, Mae graduated from Lander College, now Lander University. She was employed by the State of South Carolina, where she began and ended her work career at the South Carolina Supreme Court.

Her various responsibilities at the Supreme Court included administering the South Carolina Bar exam. As a worker, she was conscientious and dependable, very professional, and extremely capable; she consistently delivered a work product of exemplary quality. From her youth she was an active member of Union United Methodist Church in Irmo.

She transferred her membership to St. John’s United Methodist Church when she married Ebbie and moved to Batesburg after her retirement. Mae was actively involved in the women’s circles at both churches. An intelligent, strong, independent, and determined woman of integrity, Mae had an incredible memory.

She loved her family deeply and cherished the time she spent with them. By her own account, she had a happy, carefree childhood that was interrupted by the death of her only sister, Helen, when Mae was 13 years old. She battled significant arthritic pain for much of her adult life.

Mae was a huge fan of the University of South Carolina Gamecocks and faithfully followed the football, basketball, and baseball teams. Friends knew better than to contact her during the broadcast of a Carolina game. She was a wonderful cook and an accomplished pianist, who played for worship services and other church activities earlier in her life.

She loved to read and watch old movies-perhaps her favorite being An Affair to Remember. She also enjoyed fishing in the pond at her home in Batesburg and, with Ebbie, hosting fish fries for friends. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 on Friday, September 7, 2018, at St. John’s United Methodist Church, 513 W. Church Street in Batesburg, with the Rev.

Scott D. Nurse officiating. The family will greet friends in the fellowship hall immediately following the memorial service. A private family burial will precede the memorial service.

Memorials may be made to St. John’s United Methodist Church Sound System Fund, 513 W. Church Street, Batesburg, SC 29006 or to the Union Methodist Church Memorial Cemetery Fund, P. O. Box 705, Irmo, SC 29063. Barr-Price Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. Online condolences may be shared at barr-price.com.
