Marjorie (Marge) Stanger passed away on July 26 at Peace Hospice after suffering a stroke. Marge was born April 2, 1921, eighth of 11 children of William and Elizabeth Thomas, German immigrants who homesteaded at Benton Lake, later moving to Manchester, and then Ulm. Marge met the love of her life, Lawrence (Larry) Stanger, while working as a waitress in Great Falls.

After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Larry enlisted in the navy and Marge moved to San Diego where Larry was stationed. The years during World War II were a struggle for everyone. Marge worked hard at various jobs helping the war effort and waiting for the ship to dock while praying for the war to end.

After the war Larry returned to Great Falls where they built a home and raised two daughters. Marge’s dream of being a fashion designer took shape in her years creating clothing for herself and her customers. Many women in Great Falls have fond memories of her sewing creations.

Larry passed away in 1995 and Marge eventually embraced a new life in her widowed years. Active in aerobics, yoga, volunteering, and enjoying her many friendships, Marge welcomed each day with a positive attitude and a cheerful smile. With her intelligent mind and incomparable memory, Marge amazed all with her knowledge of political and historical events.

In all situations she could contribute and hold her own on any topic. Marge is survived by daughters, Marcia Teddy and Nanette (Jeff) Probst; grandsons, John (Kristin) Teddy, Steve Teddy, and Tyson Probst; brother, William (Ray) Thomas. Additional survivors include numerous nieces and nephews, and many close friends.

Marge’s generous and enthusiastic spirit will be missed by all those she knew. If you would like to honor her in a special way, please love one another and help those in need. A special thank you to staff and volunteers at Peace Hospice who wrapped Marge in their loving embrace and treated her as a queen.

At Marge’s request, there will be no formal service.
