Marjory Mae Rhinehart Tierney, age 91, of Sanford, NC, passed away on Friday, May 3, 2019 at her home in Carolina Trace. She was born in Catskill, NY on May 10, 1927 to the late Clarence D. Rhinehart and Florence Overbaugh Rhinehart. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Thomas Tierney.

In 1943 at the age of sixteen, Marjory answered the call to the women of this nation to participate in the manufacturing of machines and supplies for World War II. She became a “Rosie the Riveter” riveting 40-foot lifeboats for the Naval troop carriers. After high school she became a “Cadet Nurse” and received her nurses training at Brooklyn Methodist Hospital.

She worked for the VA for two years with shell shocked and quadriplegic veterans of that war. After taking time to have her children with her first husband, Donald Haigney, she returned to nursing and worked for 30 more years mainly in the Delivery Room of Dover General Hospital in New Jersey. She rose to be the Head of Nursing for that department helping in the delivery of hundreds of babies and also delivered several by herself with her staff when doctors failed to get there in time.

Marjory married Thomas Tierney on February 14, 1990. Thomas and Marjory were married for 13 years until his passing in 2003. Marge build her home in Carolina Trace in 1989 and retired there full time with Tom in 1990.

She dearly loved the new friends she made while living in Trace and enjoyed the many activities which the community offered her. After her move to Sanford, Marjory dedicated her time volunteering for many worthwhile causes which included Habit for Birds, Cancer Society Discovery Shop and Central Carolina Hospital Marjory is survived by her daughters, Kathleen Haigney of Sanford, Janice Haigney of Apex, and Debra Haigney Chaplin of Manchester, New Hampshire. She is also survived by two grandchildren and five great grandchildren A memorial service to celebrate the life of Marjory will be held on August 11, 2019 at 1:00 PM at St. Luke United Methodist Church.
