Mark was born on October 10, 1961 in St. Louis, Missouri, a son to Geraldine Courtway. On July 27, 1985, Mark was united in marriage to Debra Knight.

Survivors include his wife, Debra Smith; two sons: Jason Smith and Christopher (Ashley) Smith; mother, Geraldine Courtway; two grandsons: Tyler and Jace Smith; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Rick and Vera Knight and Kathy and Donnie Mosier; also surviving are nieces and nephews. Mark was preceded in death by his sister, Deborah Courtway and his father-in-law and mother-in-law: John and Bernice Knight.
