Martha Marilyn Miller recently of Vero Beach, FL passed peacefully 22 February 2019. She was born in Boonville, Missouri on April 17, 1926 to parents Clarence and Nadine Miller. Marilyn never married and was preceded in death by her parents, both of her brothers, Paul and Robert, and her beloved younger sister, Elizabeth.

She is survived by nephews David and Richard Lutkemeier, (both of Florida), and nieces Paula Miller O’Neil, Phoebe Miller, Cindy Bogatko, Debra Baron, Susan Cable, Rebecca Lutkemeier, and Patricia Standen. During and after high school, Marilyn worked for several years in her family’s drug store in Boonville, until moving to Kansas City in her early 30’s earning a Registered Nurse degree. In this role, she worked for 35 years, first as a neonatal ward nurse in a Catholic hospital, and when the hospital closed, assuming similar responsibilities at a maternity home before retiring in the early 1990s.

After retiring, Marilyn set out on her greatest adventure, a trip to Rome to see the Pope, traveling with a church group. Early in life, Marilyn acquired a nickname like so many of her generation, hers being “Wimpy” due to her passion for hamburgers. Her nieces and nephews all had stories dealing with her attitudes and tastes on any number of topics, which in all cases were firm and unyielding, to say the least.

Marilyn had decided preferences regarding many of the details of life, and these were often accompanied by a firm insistence on her own particular orthodoxy. For example, she was very scrupulous about always enjoying the same breakfast of oatmeal, raisins, brown sugar, and a glass of milk. She never drank alcohol, smoked, dated, or drove a car.

Throughout her adult life and into retirement she wore only SAS nursing shoes (ivory for spring and summer and brown or black for fall-winter). For those who knew her best in her later years, it was clear that many of her habits and attitudes harkened back to her father’s example, which she esteemed without limit. For instance, she always voted democrat, no matter who the candidate, because “Daddy was a democrat”.

Of all the family members of her generation, Marilyn was clearly the most unique in her orthodoxy of everyday life, and will not soon be forgotten by all who knew her. Dead at 92, RIP.
