Obituary for Martha Starnes Lee Martha Starnes Lee, 80, gently passed into her life eternal on January 10, 2019. She was born Martha Ann Starnes on January 28, 1938 in Spartanburg County. She faithfully served as the church secretary for Poplar Springs Baptist Church for many years.
She was a member of The Order of the Eastern Star and participated in all their service projects. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George Edward Lee who was lovingly known as “Sleepy”. They had shared 51 years of a wonderful and fulfilling marriage.
Martha absolutely relished her position as the matriarch of her family. She possessed a keen sense of style and set the pace as she and her daughters enjoyed their shopping trips together. It was never so much about the shopping, but more of that one on one time that she so enjoyed with her girls, and if you came out looking like a million dollars, that was even better.
No moss ever grew under her feet because she and the husband were always on the move and it might be horses one day and a road trip the next. It was a big world and they wanted to see as much of it as possible. Most memorable is a family trip with the girls and their families to Alaska.
The very nurturing part of Martha’s life saw her as a Sunday School teacher and as a leader in Disciple Now as she shared her understanding of a Christian’s role in telling the world the story of the sweet Jesus she served so faithfully. We can only imagine that even now, she is adding her perfect touch of style to heaven’s already glorious home. Martha is survived by her daughters, Tracie Camp and her husband Mark, and Christy Moore of Newman.
She was the epitome of everything a grandmother should be and was adored by her grandchildren, Jamie Royal and her husband Michael Scott Royal, Lindsey Nicole Camp, Katherine Walsh and her husband Charles Timothy Walsh II, Elizabeth Moore and fiancé Shawn Hillaman. Her great grandchildren are Ansley M. Arrington, Emily Yearwood, Mary Grace Yearwood, Camp Chapman, Sydney Royal, Ansley Grace Royal, Lillian Perry, Ali Perry, Charles Timothy Walsh III and James Marcus Walsh. Also surviving is her sister-in-law, Nell Lee of Spartanburg, SC.
