Obituary for Martin “Marty” Carriere Conner Martin “Marty” Carriere Conner passed away on November 7, 2018, after a long struggle with lung disease. In his last days, Marty was surrounded by his family and the love of God. Marty is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Lucina “Lucy” Conner; his children, Harold L. Conner (Nancy), Cynthia “Cindy” L. Conner Carlson, Lawrence “Larry” C. Conner (Toni), and Richard “Ricky” M. Conner (Kori); his grandchildren, Jeffery Carlson, Erica Carlson Arrington (Trey), Kristen Conner, Courtney Conner, and Brian Conner; his great-grandchildren, Jude Michael Joyce and Delilah Rose Arrington; and nephews Robert “Bobby” Conner, Michael “Mickey” Conner, and Stephen “Steve” Conner.
Marty was preceded in death by his parents Michael L. Conner, Sr. and Florence Carriere Conner, his brother Michael L. Conner, Jr., sister-in-law Gloria V. Conner, and by his beloved son Brian David Conner. Marty worked for Shell Oil Company for 35 years, and retired as a Senior Staff Engineer. His time with Shell required travel around the world, which brought him to his wife Lucy.
Marty and Lucy continued their travels well into their retirement, and saw most of the world together. Marty served in the United States Marine Corps, and was a true patriot who loved his country. Marty and Lucy were parishioners of St Andrew the Apostle in Algiers for 37 years, until they moved to the Northshore in 2004.
There, they became parishioners of Mary Queen of Peace. Marty was a 30-year retreatant at Manresa, the Jesuit retreat house in Convent, Louisiana. He so looked forward to his retreat every year, and he cherished his time there “listening to the quiet”.
Lucy and Marty celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on May 31st of this year with a surprise crawfish boil, and he celebrated his 90th birthday surrounded by family. Marty was an avid fisherman (although not always an avid catcher), loved watching a good golf tournament, and there was nothing he couldn’t build or fix. His experiments in the kitchen were legendary, and they always turned into the best family dinners.
For him, there was nothing more satisfying than watching his family enjoy what he prepared. Marty always put his family first, and as we go forward, the lessons he taught, the love he gave, and the spirit he embodied will be forever present in all we do. Visitation will be at Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church, 1501 W. Causeway Approach, Mandeville, LA 70471 on Saturday, November 17, 2018 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be at Westlawn Memorial Park.
