Mary Craig Powell, age 78, of Columbus, passed away January 20th, 2019. Preceded in death by her parents Braxton and Frances Daughtridge, sister Peggy Daughtridge and husbands Carl Ingling and Claud Powell. Survived by her husband Jim MacCallum, son John Powell and his wife Wendy, son Robert Powell, and granddaughter Rebecca Powell.

She received her baccalaureate degree Magna Cum Laude from East Carolina University and her Master of Music in Piano Performance from Wichita State University. After teaching at Campbell College in North Carolina, Erskine College in South Carolina, and Augustana College in Illinois, she taught students privately in Athens, Ohio for eleven years. After moving to Columbus, Ohio she taught students and teachers in the Suzuki method at the Community Music School and Conservatory of Music at Capital University.

During this time, her recognition as a Suzuki piano teacher grew to international proportions with invitations to teach children and teachers in Central and South America, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Bermuda, Italy, Singapore, Malaysia and Japan. She received the “Excellence in Teaching” award and the “Excellence in Suzuki Teacher Education” award from the Suzuki Association of America as well as the Distinguished Alumni Award from East Carolina University. She wrote a book entitled Focus on Suzuki Piano and was Piano Editor for Suzuki World Magazine.

She adored cooking for her family and loved her poodles, bichon and “Fred the Frog”. We will miss her beautiful smile, quick laugh and generous spirit. A memorial service will be held in her honor at the United Methodist Church, 825 E. Olentangy St., Powell, Ohio on Saturday, February 2nd at 10:30 am.
