Obituary for Mary E. Lyon Mary E. Lyon, 66, passed away Wednesday, January 2, 2019 at Mercy Hospital in Joplin. Mary was born March 14, 1952 in Fort Scott, Kansas to Harlan E. and Marguerite “Lovell” Lyon. Mary worked and retired as a school teacher from Jefferson Elementary in Joplin.

She taught Sunday school at the First Methodist Church in Carthage; she was also a member of the church’s hand-bell choir and a worship leader. Mary was a trained opera singer; she loved to read and cross-stitch. But, her greatest joy was watching Disney movies and spending time with her grandchildren.

Mary is survived by her daughter, Lucy Forcum and husband Eric Peterson of Carthage; one brother, Joseph E. Lyon and wife Mariann; one sister, Ruth “Elaine” Lenz and husband Bill; and two grandchildren, Lily and Lexy. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 12, 2019 at the First United Methodist Church in Carthage. Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church in care of Ulmer Funeral Home.
