Mary Hansen August 08, 1937 – May 19, 2019 Send Flowers View/Sign Guest Book| Send Sympathy Card Sanbornville, NH Mary Hansen, born August 8, 1937, died on May 19, 2019, after a period of failing health, at the age of 81. She was the only child of Otto and Dorothy (Bryant) Hansen and lived in Brookfield and Sanbornville, NH, her whole life. Her longtime home was on Summer Street where she lived for over seventy-five years.
Mary attended the local schools and graduated from Spaulding High School in Rochester in 1956. Not quite sure what she wanted to have for a career, she answered an ad for Huggins Hospital to become a Nursing Assistant and later she became an L.N.A. This career spanned 1960 to 2002, when she retired.
Singing was a big part of Mary’s life. She had a beautiful soprano voice and could be heard around the community in church, schools and community events. Arranging and composing was also a way to continue her passion for music.
In her later years when she was unable to sing, she took up drums. Her ecumenical spirit led her through many Christian denominations until finding her spiritual home at St. John the Baptist Episcopal at the age of 13. After the death of both of her parents in 1975, she discovered a new passion in her life-The Outdoors!
Hiking, camping, mountain climbing, and cross-country skiing became a big part of her life. It is while volunteering for Appalachian Mountain Club trail work that Mary met a special man who became her boyfriend until ten years later when he died in a tragic accident. By 1985, Mary had climbed all 48 of NH’ s 4000 foot mountains.
This gave her entrance into an exclusive club made up of other climbers who had done the same. After reaching this pinnacle of success, Mary continued with climbing with Mt. Willard emerging as her favorite.
She has requested that her ashes be scattered there. Those who knew Mary can agree she was the epitome of a New Hampshire Yankee. Taciturn, frugal and suffering no fools.
She asks to be remembered as a person who loved God, people, music, animals (especially house cats and turtles), and New Hampshire’s woods, mountains and waterfalls. Mary spent her final few months at Mountain View Community where she received kind, loving, grace-filled, care with a good measure of patience. She is survived by cousin Neal Hansen and wife Terry in Oklahoma, and cousin Kathleen Spedding of Brentwood, NH.
Mary will be very much missed by her dear friend Becky Keating of Sanbornville and Pat Fraser of Ossipee. Visitation will be at Peaslee Funeral Home, 2079 Wakefield Road in Sanbornville on Tuesday, May 28, 2019 from 5-7pm and her funeral will be at St John the Baptist Episcopal Church on Wednesday, May 29, 2019, at 10am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. John the Baptist Church, 118 High Street, Sanbornville, NH 03872.
