Mary J. Elderkin passed peacefully on Monday, October 22, 2018. Mary was born to Claude and Susie Elderkin on April 16, 1921 in Reno Nevada. She was raised with her 4 sisters (Bea, Marguerite, Claudia, and Florence) and one brother (Donald).

She attended school in Reno and college in Auburn, California before returning to Reno. She was soon hired by Peerless Cleaners because owner Fred Bonnenfant liked her handwriting. She proudly managed the books and was an accomplished seamstress at Peerless… Read More » Cleaners for 50 years.

She had one son, Donald, with husband Ben C. Smith. Mary was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings. She is survived by her son, Donald (Hsiu) Smith, granddaughter Dawn (David) Danen, great grandchildren Anthony, Kevin, and Ryan, as well as numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews and many, many friends.

Services will be held at Mountain View Cemetery, 435 Stoker Avenue, Reno, at 10:00 am on November, 2, 2018, followed by a Celebration of Life at the Mountain View Mortuary, 425 Stoker Avenue, Reno. We encourage attendees to wear bright colors to celebrate Mary’s life. In lieu of flowers, please honor her memory by making a donation to the Shriners Hospital for Children, the Disabled American Veterans, or the SPCA of Northern Nevada.
