Harris, 72, passed away the morning of Monday January 28, 2019 in Atlanta, Ga. Born in Norfolk, VA, and raised in the Norfolk/Virginia Beach area, she was the only child of the late James Harris and Bernice Stokes. She graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in the class of 1964; received her Bachelors degree from The University of the District of Columbia in 1973 in Community Planning and Development and her Masters degree from Morgan State University in 1975 in Urban Planning Analysis.

Mary had the pleasure of living and working in several locations, including Baltimore, MD, Washington, DC, and Columbia, SC, before settling in Atlanta where her daughter was born. She worked for the Fulton County Government in Atlanta as an Urban Planner and Program Evaluation Specialist from 1987 until she retired in 2006. Mary was a fiercely independent, and to many, she epitomized the “phenomenal woman” as described by Maya Angelou.

She adored being a mother and enjoyed encouraging all of her daughter’s academic pursuits and supporting all of her daughter’s activities. In addition, she was a warm friend to all humanity and went out of her way to help and encourage those she came in contact with. Those who met her always seem to remember her fondly.

She was an active member of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Atlanta for over 25 years. Mary has been reunited in God’s kingdom with her mother Bernice ‘Bernie’ Stokes (neé Jones) and her father James ‘Fats’ Harris. She has left to mourn, her daughter; Norlethia, her daughter’s father; Andrew Webb, her stepfather James Stokes, many beloved cousins, and countless friends.

She was loved and will definitely be missed by all. There will be a graveside service Friday, February 1, 11a.m. at Roosevelt Memorial Park. SERVICES Graveside Service Friday, February 01, 2019 11:00 AM Roosevelt Memorial Park 1101 Campostella Rd.
