Mary Lucille “Lou” Hammer Watkins January 26, 1925-October 29, 2018 Resident of Porterville, CA Lou went home to be with her Lord after succumbing to injuries sustained in a fall. She was born in Eureka, Kansas to Frank and Clara Brown joining older sister Irene. She was joined later by siblings Forrest “Buddy” and Frances.

The family moved to Lindsay, California in 1943 where Lou became a hairdresser, a career in which she excelled until her retirement in 1985. She married Marlowe “Mike” Hammer on April 28, 1953 and they raised daughters Leah and Mary. On May 10, 1995, the widowed Lou would marry Luke Watkins.

Always service-oriented, Lou volunteered in many capacities throughout her life. She was a Sunday School teacher, choir member, Deaconess, and worked with youth in AWANA at First Baptist Church in Strathmore. She was also active with the Gideons Auxillary, Rescue Mission, and led Bible studies at the Tulare County Jail.

In 1990 she began volunteering at Sierra View District Hospital as a “Pink Lady” which she continued to do until she was physically unable to continue in recent years. Lou is preceded in death by husbands Mike Hammer and Luke Watkins, daughter Leah Heard, and siblings Irene Gass and Buddy Brown. She is survived by daughter Mary Watkins, sister Frances Brown, grandchildren Ken, Terry, Amber, Andrea, Tyson, Drew, and Jared, 20 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren.

Friends and family are invited to attend a graveside service on Wednesday, November 21, 2018 at 9:00 a.m. at Lindsay Cemetery followed by a memorial service at Porterville Nazarene Church at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Gideons International or Sierra View District Hospital League Inc. Scholarship Fund.
