Obituary of Matthew Sefcik Matthew Stepan Sefcik, a resident of LaGrange, New York, passed away suddenly on Sunday, December 23, 2018, at Vassar Brothers Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Manhattan on April 24, 1956, he was the son of Olga Sefcik and the late Matthew Sefcik. Matty is survived by his wife of 39 years, his high school sweetheart, and the love of his life, Donna.

He also leaves behind three beautiful children: his son Matthew and his wife Katie, of Poughkeepsie, his daughter Kara and her husband Adam of Hopewell Junction, and his daughter Lindy of LaGrange. He is also survived by his sister, Tina Zybala, and her husband David, of Charlotte, NC, his niece, Caroline, and nephew, Daniel, along with several cousins. Matty was also lucky to have a wonderful sister in law, Patty Todd and her fiancé Ray Wagner, and his brother in law, John McGrath and his wife Bonnie, and a close circle of friends.

But most of all, he cherished his newborn grandson and namesake, Matthew Sefcik the 5th, whom he adored and made special visits under the guise of wanting to watch Monday Night Football. An avid sports fan, Matty loved the Yankees and the Jets, and had a real passion for the game of soccer. He played at Arlington High School, SUNY Oneonta, and SUNY Albany.

He worked in finance, but always made sure to attend every sporting event his children participated in, traveling up and down the east coast for soccer tournaments throughout the years, and still today eagerly attending the games his daughter coaches. He was extremely proud of his kids and all their accomplishments, and they will greatly miss his presence. Matt served on the boards of Town of Poughkeepsie Soccer and Town of LaGrange Soccer leagues, and also coached his children’s teams for many years, always giving back to the community.

In addition to sports, he loved working outside landscaping. Not only did he tend to his own yard, he made sure to help out his oldest daughter by planting flower and vegetable gardens at her home, bringing beauty all around. He also enjoyed hunting for and restoring old furniture, displaying his talent through many pieces at his youngest daughter’s apartment.

His favorite vacation spot was the Jersey shore, where he spent summers with his family and friends, forever combing the sands in search of beach glass and body-surfing in the ocean with his kids. His sweet demeanor, humor, thoughtfulness and selflessness will never be forgotten. Matty was a true family man, putting his wife and kids above all, and will be missed so very much.
