Obituary for Melvine O Getman Melvine O. Getman was born the daughter of Fred and Emilie Olsen Martin on the 20th of June, 1922 in Russell, ND. The family moved to Sherwood, OR when Melvine was three and settled on Willamette Street where she lived most of her life surrounded by her parents and siblings and their families. She worked from a young age on the family’s chicken and black raspberry farm, and then in the dance hall, skating rink, grocery store and feed stores owned by her parents.
Melvine graduated from Sherwood High School in 1939. She then worked as a bookkeeper for the Portland Canning Company, Hervin dog food company, at Garrigus Sherwood Lumber and finally the Frontier Leather Company. She was praised for her hard work, accuracy and pleasant disposition to all.
Melvine enjoyed dancing, bowling, gardening, baking and cooking in between raising her three children, David, Linda and Dennis. By the age of 47 she had seven grandchildren. She ensured every child had a full stocking at Christmas and a treat-filled basket at Easter and enjoyed Martin Hill family gatherings and reunions.
Giving time to the Sherwood United Methodist Church as the bookkeeper, coffee break assistant and as a volunteer on many other church projects was meaningful and was a demonstration of her faith in action to Melvine. She was an advocate for the perceived underdog and spent time thinking about, and praying for those in need. On Sunday, July 29, 2018 Melvine died in Newberg, OR of natural causes at the age of 96.
She was surrounded by family and the excellent care givers of Legacy Hospice and Brookdale Newberg. Melvine was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Linda Hampton; Son, Dennis Getman; Sisters, Irene, Rose, Dorothy and Alida and brother, Floyd; She is survived by her Son; David (RoseMarie) Getman of McMinnville, OR; daughter-in-law, Linda Getman of Sherwood, OR; Grandchildren, Amy (Chip) Perkett of Canby, OR Shelli (Chris) Atkison of Milwaukie, OR Kimberly (Bill) Thomas of Convoy, OH, Sheryl (Jon) Hughes of Aloha, OR, Michael (Laura) Hampton of McMinnville, OR, Rich (Kim) Getman of Newberg, OR and Randy Getman of Toledo, OR; great grandchildren, Ashley, Aaron, Scott, Wendy, William, Sarah, Joshua, Caleb, Ben, Emma, Annie, Ethan, Sophia, and Lucas; great-great grandchildren, David, Sadie and Xavier and many nieces and nephews. Her family is planning a memorial service and it will be held 1:00pm, Saturday, August 18, 2018 at the Attrell’s Funeral Chapel in Sherwood with a reception to follow at the Sherwood United Methodist Church.
