Michael D. Allred, passed away on January 14, 2019 at the George E. Whalen VA facility, surrounded by family and friends. Mike was born October 6, 1956 to David H. Allred and Shirley VanBallegooie Allred. Mike was the second oldest of five children.
He loved being the big brother and always looked out for his mother and sisters. Mike graduated from Clearfield High School in 1975. While attending high school he was on the football team, joined the ROTC and performed with the drama team.
Mike starred in many roles, but his favorite one was playing Santa Clause. Mike would play Santa Clause every year as well as for family and friends’ gatherings. After high school Mike worked at Lagoon Amusement Park during the summer of 1976, where he met his wife, Peggy Ann Robinson.
Mike married Peggy on March 19, 1977 in the Southern Baptist Church in Warner Robins, Georgia. Soon after graduating high school Mike joined the Air Force and got stationed at Malstrom AFB in Great Falls, Montana where he performed sustained maintenance on minuteman missiles. His service was cut short due to health reasons and he was medically discharged.
Mike and Peggy moved back to Utah and settled in Layton where Mike raised three children: Melissa Ann, Joshua Michael, and Ambere Dawn. While working as an animal control officer Mike enrolled at Weber State University where he received his associate degree. His major focus of study was communications with a minor in psychology.
While there he worked at the student radio station where he earned the nickname “The Wildman”. His love of music was brought to a whole new level and he enjoyed sharing his passion for music with others; especially working along side his good friend Jerri Byers. Mike then got a security job which moved him out of the DJ booth and into the front lines of live music.
His cohorts were now the musicians that he had only previously heard through his headphones. He was dubbed “The Animal” partly due to his enormous stature and fuzzy face. This served him well in his security job as he could portray intimidation.
However, Mike was a gentle giant and had a big heart. While working with CSC as security Mike was able to meet numerous famous musicians from a variety of genres. “The Animal” took pride in working venues during the Winter Olympics and at Mile High Stadium where he could watch his favorite football team.
And he still made time to support the local boys at the U of U. Health reasons again cut another illustrious career short. However, Mike would not let this detour him from living life to its’ fullest. If he couldn’t get in a boat to fish, then the shorelines at Jordanelle and Rockport with his Dad and Brother would do just fine.
He renewed his love for motorcycles while building his trike with his brother. He drove that thing everywhere and had the biggest grin every time he took it out for a drive. It made him feel free.
But his greatest accomplishment was his children and grandchildren. Mike truly enjoyed raising his children and sharing his passion for life with them. He was happiest while spending time with his grandchildren and sneaking coffee into their bottles.
Mike and Peggy left Layton and resided in Clinton for 7 years. There Mike enjoyed various hobbies with his wife, helping with the care of his grandchildren and family visits. He also took comfort in the fact that he could walk down the street to visit the final resting place of his mother.
As Mike’s health declined significantly, it was decided by family that he could receive better care at the George E. Wahlen VA home. The staff were fantastic with Mike’s care and needs. Many of the residents and staff called him “Mikey”.
He wanted to participate in all the rec activities and was a bingo champ. He made staff and residents laugh and made friends with everyone he met. Mike loved his Monday coffee date with his daughter Ambere and weekly visits with his wife Peg, his son Josh and his daughter Missy.
Mike recently celebrated his 62nd birthday and Christmas with his family. In one of his proudest moments he was able to attend his youngest daughter Ambere’s graduation from Weber State University. We all will be forever grateful for the care Mike received while at the VA home.
We truly appreciate that the VA presented our brother, father, son and grandfather with military honors the night of his passing. With the flag draped over him and staff along the corridor with their hands over their hearts and others saluting, with taps being played and the flags flown at half-mast. We appreciate Premier Funeral Services for handling the cremation and details to make this process easier.
Mike is survived by his father David H. Allred, wife of 42 years Peggy Allred, his daughter Melissa Ann Allred, his son Joshua Michael Allred and his fiancée Monice Mecham, his daughter Ambere Dawn Nelson and husband Christopher Nelson, sisters Shirlene Allred, Christina Nalder, and Tina Marie Rankin and brother Jeff Allred, Grandchildren Danielle Ortega, Quintin Allred, Wyatt Nelson, Nevaeh Miller, Chris Mecham, Kaylana Nelson, Jenna Nelson, Kayla Allred and Kylee Allred. He is preceded by his mother Shirley VanBallegooie, granddaughters Jorden Courageous Allred, Elizabeth Allred, his in-laws W. Clyde and Carol Robinson and many others that have gone before him. “Our family chain is broken, and nothing seems the same; but God calls us one by one, and the chain will link again”.
There will be a memorial at the George E. Wahlen Facility on Saturday, January 26, 2019 from 1-3pm. For family, friends and staff to celebrate Mike’s life. Then the Patriot Guard Riders will lead a procession to the Clinton City Cemetery for a graveside service with military honors.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the George E. Wahlen recreational department in honor of Michael David Allred. Please specify that the donation is for the rec department. The donation can be mailed or taken into the facility, or you may give it to his daughter Ambere and she will take it into the facility.
“All I know is they better have coffee up there”.
