Mildred Sonta Piechota March 20, 1916 – February 03, 2019 Share this obituary Send Flowers Sign Guestbook| Send Private Condolences| Send Sympathy Card Mildred “Millie” Sonta Piechota , 102 of Belmar passed away on Feb. 3, 2019. Mildred was born on March 20, 1916 in Newark, NJ, daughter of Michael Sonta and Martha Getch.

She was raised in Maplewood and Jersey City before moving to Belmar in 1956 with her late husband Anthony. Mildred and Anthony were always busy. They owned Tony’s Tavern at 190 York Street in Jersey City; operated Mildred’s Bungalows in Belmar from 1956 to 2007 all the while owning and operating the Wanamassa Variety and Hardware store for 20 years, retiring in 1984.

In 1963, Mildred became totally visually impaired. Rather then grieve the loss of her eyesight she rose up on a mission to help others and became an advocate in helping Blind people throughout the state of N.J. In 1965, as an officer of the Monmouth County Association of the Blind, lead the funding drive to establish the organization’s current headquarters in WallN.J. Mildred had served multiple terms as President, Vice President, and Treasurer of the organization. She was also a member of the N.J. Council of the Blind, where she chaired several state conventions in the early 70’s and had the opportunity to attend multiple National Federation conventions representing N.J. Mildred also was an active member of the Soroptimist Club International of Asbury Park for over 50 years, where she held various officer roles.

Mildred was also a past member of the Salvation Army Home League, Asbury Park. Over the years, she received numerous awards, accolades and certificates from the Lions ClubInternational, New Jersey Association of the Deaf Blind, New Jersey Council of the Blind, NJ Commission for the Blind and was also recognized by the Rotary Foundation with a Paul Harris Fellow award. When Mildred was not helping those with visual impairment via her community involvement, she was just a plain Mom to Kevin J. Devine, whom she resided with in Belmar, where they guided each other along via years of love and devotion.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Michael and Martha Sonta; husband Anthony S. Piechota; siblings John Sonta; Florence (Sonta) Rebori; and Helen (Sonta) Kazawic; nephews Peter Kazawic and Patrick Nolan. She leaves many loving nieces, nephews and their families; Janet (Kazawic) Nolan, Navesink; Susan (Kazawic) Burke,Gilbert ,AZ; Nancy (Kazawic) Griffin ,Toms River; John Sonta , Dix Hills,NY; Michael Sonta, Brielle; Jill (Rebori )Figarella, Hopewell Junction NY; John Rebori, Shamong, NJ; Linda (Rebori ) Berquist, Voorheesville, NY. ; and many nieces and nephews on her late husband Anthony’s side of the family, along with numerous great, great nieces and nephews and many, many dear friends, who loved her so dearly.
