Obituary for Miriam B. Chaffee (Bacon) Miriam B. Chaffee (Bacon) passed away Saturday, June 2nd, 2018, at the age of 97. Miriam was born in Harrison, Maine, to Leland and Blanche Buck on April 17, 1921. Miriam (Mim) attended eight years of rural school and graduated valedictorian from Bridgton Academy in North Bridgton, Maine, in 1939.

Her education continued at Farmington State Teachers College where in 1942, she received an Elementary Education Life Time Certificate. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Wayne State University in 1957 and a master’s degree from Michigan State University in 1965. Miriam taught in Rangely Lake and Augusta, Maine; for the US Army Special Training Unit at Fort Sheridan, Illinois; at the Carleton School in China Township, Michigan; and at Eddy Elementary in St. Clair, Michigan.

Miriam was a charter member of the Blue Water Lapidary Society that started in 1959. She was president of the local Education Association and led negotiations that resulted in the first contract between teachers and administration. She participated in an adult reading program sponsored by the Mott Foundation in Flint, Michigan.

She was an active member in the US Coast Guard Auxiliary for 20 years. She held several appointed offices and was elected to the office of Commander for the Port Huron Flotilla. Additionally, Miriam was a long time member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in St. Clair.

She was a Sunday School teacher, served in St. Paul’s Guild and Alter Guild, and worked the Thrift Shop and served on the Vestry. Miriam is preceded in death by her parents, brothers Embert Buck and Lee Buck, sisters Madelyn Buck and Margaret Caswell, and husbands Donn M. Bacon and Albert Chaffee. She is survived by sisters Myrna Colicchio and Muriel Cote, sons Donn (Mary Lou) Bacon, Kent (Christine) Bacon, and Drin (Lynne) Bacon, 5 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild, many nieces and nephews, and the extended Chaffee family.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be Monday, June 11, from 3pm to 8pm at Young Funeral Home, China Twp. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, June 12, at 11 am, at the Holy Family Episcopal Church in St. Clair.
