Nannie Mae Sykes, of Laurel, passed away on February 10, 2019 at age 82. Nannie was a resident of Laurel Wood Nursing Center and passed away at that location. She was born in Perry County, December 4, 1936 to parents, Fred and Emma Thompson.

Nannie had a large family and she loved to help her mom take care of her siblings, cook, and garden. Her family were share croppers and many stories have been told about her jumping in to help the guys out by plowing the mules and planting the crops. Nannie married Dodd Sykes and had 6 children Susan, John, Bill, Mitch, Charlotte, and Sandra.

Nannie was a homemaker and a wonderful friend and neighbor. She loved to cook, garden, and take care of her family! Nannie is survived by her daughter, Susan Merritt and husband, Buddy; son, John Sykes and wife, Mary; son, Bill Sykes and wife, Rita; son, Mitch Sykes; daughter, Charlotte Ellzey; daughter, Sandra Berlin; 13 grandchildren, Eric Berlin (Leann), Michael Brewer, Roddy Merritt, Rick Merritt (Laken), Billy Sykes, Gwynne Hicks (Brian), Becky Wilson (Fabian), Dwan Thompson (Jeremiah), Brandon Bowman (Crystal), Austin Sykes, Matt Sykes, Haley Sykes, and Maggie Sykes; fourteen great grandchildren; her sister, Mary Lee Dupree; brothers, Henry Thompson, John Ray Thompson, Odis Thompson, Freddie Thompson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her sisters, Mary Alice Clark, Pearlie May Holliman, Betty Lou Grantham; brothers, Jimmie Ray Thompson, Willie Lee (Bobie) Thompson, Milton (Micky) Thompson; infants, Tommy, Nonna Beth, and Emma. Services will be held Thursday February 14, 2019 at Memory Chapel Funeral Home and visitation will begin at 12:30 P.M. and the service to follow at 2:00 P.M. Interment will be held at the Myrick Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Roddy Merritt, Rick Merritt, Jerry Upton, Eric Berlin, Fabian Wilson, and Brian Hicks.
