Opal Carrie Singer Hanke March 26, 1925 – January 02, 2019 Local Florists Opal Singer Hanke, 93, of Remsen, Iowa, formerly of Le Mars, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, January 2, 2019 at Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 7, 2019 at St. John’ Lutheran Church in Merrill, Iowa. Pastor Elizabeth Lippke will officiate.

Burial will follow in Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation with the family present will be from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 6, 2019 at Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Le Mars. There will be a Prayer Service at 5:00 p.m. Visitation will resume from 10:00 a.m. until service time on Monday at the church.

Arrangements are with the Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Le Mars, Iowa. Expressions of sympathy can be extended to the family through www. rexwinkelfh.com.

Opal Carrie Swisher was born March 26, 1925 in Plymouth County, Iowa, the daughter of John and Caroline (Karley) Swisher. She grew up on a farm near Merrill, Iowa. She attended country school in Plymouth County, Iowa.

She was united in marriage to Vernon Singer on May 28, 1945 in Le Mars. Early on, they made their home in Le Mars. In 1958, they moved to Hawarden, Iowa where Opal worked for Otis Radio.

In 1971, they moved back to Le Mars. She went to work for Zenith in Sioux City. Later, she went to work for Harker’s Distribution in Le Mars until her retirement.

Vernon passed away December 5, 1976 in Le Mars. She married Don Hanke on January 8, 1982 in Merrill. They made their home in Merrill.

Don passed away June 6, 1988 in Sioux City. Opal moved back to Le Mars in the mid 90’s. In 2011, she moved to Prime Assisted Living in Le Mars where she made many new friends.

In July of 2013, she became a resident of Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Le Mars. While growing up and living in Merrill, she was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Merrill.

Through the years, she enjoyed dancing, playing cards, and listening to music. But most of all, she loved the time spent with family and friends. Survivors include her two sons: James (Marcia) Singer of Merrill, IA, and Terry (Deb) Singer of Le Mars; 6 grandchildren: Rick (Robin) Singer of Le Mars, Jerry (Sondra) Singer of Jefferson City, MO, Jeff (Karlene) Singer of Le Mars, Becky (Shane) Baker of Underwood, IA, Craig (Elizabeth) Singer of Maurice, IA, and Dana (Mike) DeBuhr of Kansas City, MO; 16 great grandchildren; 7 great great grandchildren; two sisters: Sally Grasz of Sioux Falls, SD, and Lucille Carlson of Beresford, SD; two sisters in law: Jeri Swisher of Harlan, IA, and Maggie Singer Ideker of Le Mars, IA; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Caroline Swisher; two husbands, Vernon Singer and Donald Hanke; an infant son: Jerry Lee Singer; three sisters: Edna in infancy, Evelyn Anderson, and Elverna Marineau; two brothers: John Swisher and William Swisher; and her in laws: Edwin Anderson, Marvin Marineau, Norman Grasz, Clarence ‘Tubby’ Carlson, and Marjorie Swisher.
