Obituary for Opal M. Lumetta Mrs. Opal Lumetta of Eltingville aged 87, died September 23rd after a short illness. A native of Dale County, Alabama, as a young woman she worked in a millinery shop, designing and making hats, before marrying in 1950 and relocating to Staten Island. She was a crusader for the developmentally disabled and a long-time member of Community Res’ board of directors.

Mrs. Lumetta was an honoree at the Community Res Annual Gala in 2000. She attended the Borough of Manhattan Community College and was employed by the NYC Department of Social Services as an Income Maintenance Specialist and later as office manager of Community Board 1. A founding member of the Lioness Club of Staten Island, she served as a union delegate for the Social Workers Union (371) and the Clerical Workers Union (1549) and also as a youth advisor for the CYO.

For many years Mrs. Lumetta was an active member of the Rosary Society of Saint Mary of the Assumption Church. She was also active with the New York State Association for the Mental Retarded, the March of Dimes, and the SI Business and Professional Women’s Club. She was predeceased by her husband of 50 years, Matteo (Mike) Lumetta and her son, Matthew Thomas She is survived by three daughters: Margaret (Taras) Baran, Michele (Samuel) Miller, and Maria (Matthew) Ciardiello.

In addition to her three daughters she is also survived by six grandchildren: Astrid Baran, Jason, David and James Miller and Nicholas and Christina Ciardiello and two great-grandsons, John and Christopher Miller. And her sister, Rita Brannon of Arlington, Virginia. The family will receive visitors on Tuesday and Wednesday, September 25th and 26th from 2-5 and 7-9 pm at John Vincent Scalia Home for Funerals 28 Eltingville Blvd Staten Island, NY 10312.
