Obituary for OSCAR EMANUEL LARSON Jr. Oscar Emanuel Larson, Jr., 99, of Forge Road, Negaunee Township, passed away peacefully Saturday evening, November 10, 2018, at the Eastwood Nursing Center. He was surrounded by the people he loved. Oscar was born October 22, 1919 in Marquette, to Oscar E. and Matilda (Kappes) Larson, Sr. and graduated from Negaunee High School, Class of 1937.
He was a proud veteran of WWII, having served in the United States Navy where he received electrical training from Iowa State University. He also was a proud member of The Greatest Generation, having survived The Great Depression just like so many of his peers because of values and a work ethic displayed in such instances as when he and his father hand-shoveled for two days to clear the quarter-mile road from home to the main highway after the 1938 “Storm of the Century” dumped 30 inches of snow on Negaunee Township, some of it drifting so high as to cover utility poles. His family lived in San Diego for two years during the depression before returning to Upper Michigan and becoming one of the first to settle in Negaunee Township.
Oscar was employed by Marquette Home Improvement from 1947-1955 and from Upper Peninsula Generating Company from 1955-1984, where he retired as the superintendent of maintenance. Throughout his career and in retirement, he was a longtime member of the Marquette Range Engineers Club. Mr. Larson was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, Negaunee.
He was a quiet and generous man who most loved spending time with his family. He enjoyed traveling to Florida to visit his brother and family, fishing trips to Canada, gardening, picking berries, feeding the birds, being outside in the summer to enjoy the peace of his Negaunee Township home, the annual Turkey grilling for the 4th of July, cheering for the Green Bay Packers, visiting Green Bay where he had a second residence for a number of years, watching the Game Show Network and the Weather Channel, and spending time with his beloved cats and dogs. He never wasted a breath, traveling all over the country in his last years of life for sightseeing and to visit family.
Surviving are his son, Daniel (JoAnn) Larson of Green Bay; daughter, Dessalee (Greg) Strampe of Madison; grandson, Daniel Larson of Madison; granddaughter, Jenny Larson of Austin, TX; sister-in-law, Daryl Larson of West Palm Beach, FL. ; nephew, David (Pam) Larson; nephew, Keith (Stacey) Larson; niece, Laura (Jay) Di Egidio; niece, Kimberly (Marion) Coates; sister-in-law Carol Wommer of Anaheim, CA; and several other nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lorraine (Babich) Larson in 2003; his son, Gary Larson in 2012; siblings: John Edward, Joseph, Jack, Richard and Helen; and nephew, Donald.
Oscar’s family extends a special thank you to the staff of Eastwood Nursing Center for their daily company and compassionate care. He enjoyed his Eastwood home for the past two years. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, November 17th at St. John’s Episcopal Church with Rev.
Jack Lenten officiating. Burial will be in Park Cemetery in Marquette. The family will greet relatives and friends for one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday, and also during a luncheon in the church hall following services.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed in Oscar’s memory to the Upper Peninsula Animal Welfare Shelter (UPAWS), 84 Snowfield Rd. , Negaunee, MI. 49866.
