Paul Edward Roth, 91, died on Monday evening, March 11, of natural causes. Paul was born on October 15, 1927 in West Liberty, Ohio, to Joseph and Barbara (Roth) Roth. He married Caroll June Hostetler of Aurora, Ohio, on June 20, 1953.

Together they celebrated 65 years of marriage. In addition to Caroll June, Paul is survived by one daughter and three sons: Linda (Phil) Yoder, Tim (Peggy) Roth, John (Ruth) Roth, and Stan (Susan) Roth, along with 15 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his siblings—Elmer, Christian, Leo, Amos, Lester, and Rebecca—and by two children: Steven Roth and Jennifer (Doug) Wengerd.

Paul graduated from Goshen College (1953) and Northwestern Medical School (1957). In 1962, following four years of voluntary service as a medical doctor in Aibonito, Puerto Rico, Paul and Caroll June moved to Killbuck, Ohio where he served as the community’s primary physician for nearly 30 years. During that time he came to be known and loved for his gentle spirit and compassionate care for all those he encountered.

In 1970 he was awarded Ohio Physician of the Year in recognition of his extraordinary service during a major flood the previous year. Paul was an active member of Millersburg Mennonite Church for more than fifty years, serving in various roles as Sunday School teacher for children and adults and elder. Paul was a person who lived his faith in friendship, service and generosity, befriending and reaching out to those in need.

He volunteered many hours at Save & Serve (MCC) Thrift Shop, and enjoyed participating in service trips to various parts of the world. Paul was an avid gardener and gifted woodworker, who loved to make furniture, toys, and handmade gifts for his children and grandchildren. Though he was a quiet and humble person, he left a significant legacy in his family, his church, and his community.

Visitation will take place on Friday, March 15, from 4-7pm at the Millersburg Mennonite Church. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 16, at 11:00 at the Martins Creek Mennonite Church. The family wishes to express its thanks to Dr. Latouf and the staff at Joel Pomerene Hospital and Sycamore Run for their compassionate care.

Memorial contributions may be given to Open Arms Hispanic Ministries (PO Box 124, Kidron, OH 44636, openarmshispanicministry.org).
