Pedro’s Obituary Pedro F. “Mono” Vanegas, Sr. 74, of Hereford passed away Sunday, March 17, 2019 in Hereford. Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday at 11:00 AM at La Iglesia de San Jose Catholic Church with Celebrant Ramon Mora officiating, burial to follow at West Park Cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted to Mendez and Mullins Family Funeral Home of Hereford.

Rosary will be Wednesday evening at 6:00 PM at the funeral home. Pedro was born April 29, 1944 in Mexico to Estancio and Rosa (Flores) Benegas. Pedro has been a resident of Hereford since 1971.

Pedro worked on pipe irrigation in the Panhandle, Arrowhead Mills for a couple of years and Excel, which is now Cargill Meat Solutions, for 7 years, he later was employed by the Potato Shed and retired from this job due to his disability. Pedro went to work assisting his wife at Caison House, Ranch House and Big Daddy’s Restaurant. In his younger years Pedro enjoyed fishing.

He loved to cook and was famous amongst his family for his “tamales and rice fruit pudding”. His children say lucky for them, he gave them his famous recipes. Pedro also enjoyed woodworking and arts and crafts.

He and his wife loved holidays and always made them “Big” with lots of food and family time, Easter was a Special occasion when Pedro and Aurora would make hundreds of confetti eggs for the grandchildren. Pedro was a great caregiver for his wife. He was a caring, simple, honest man.

He was a member of La Iglesia de San Jose Catholic Church. Those left to cherish his memories are his children Florestela Rodriguez and her husband Juan of Hereford, Maria Bowen and her husband Norman of Idaho, Jose Luis Vanegas of Austin and Pedro Vanegas, Jr. and his wife Andrea of Richlands, N.C.; four brothers Gabriel Banegas of McAllen, Esteban Banegas of San Antonio, Epifanio Vanegas of Juarez, Mexico and Jorge Benegas of Arizona; 13 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Pedro is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Aurora Vanegas and a sister Concha Vanegas.
