He received his BFA from Washington University in St. Louis. After he graduated, Ray was employed by several advertising agencies on a freelance basis. He was also a fine art painter specializing in landscapes and wildlife.

Ray is survived by his wife, Alice; his brother Rod and sister Violet; his two children Mark and his wife Ashley and their son Cole; and Samantha and her husband Scott.
