Obituary for Rev. Arvie L. Maynard REV. ARVIE LEON MAYNARD, 91, of Huntington, West Virginia moved forward in eternal life on May 25, 2018.
He was born August 14, 1926 in Columbus Grove, Ohio, the son of the late Henry and Martha Maynard. He served in the U.S. Army from November 1944 through March 1947, achieving the rank of First Lieutenant. After graduating in 1953 from the University of Cincinnati, where he was a member of Triangle fraternity, he was employed by the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad as a Civil Engineer.
He retired from CSX Corporation as Director of Engineering Material Control in 1983. He then attended Marshall University, graduating in 1986 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. In 1989 he graduated from Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Georgia with the degree of Master of Divinity.
This was followed by a call to serve as pastor of Edgewood Presbyterian Church outside of Lewisburg, West Virginia, retiring in 1997. He was an avid motorcycle rider, having been Chaplin of the River Cities Chapter Harley Owners Group. He put over 100,000 miles on his Softail Classic, riding until he was 86 years old.
Many are familiar with the train painted on the gas tank, a tribute to his love of railroading. He was a member of the Rotary Club of Barboursville and the Engineers Club of Huntington. He attended Bates Memorial Presbyterian Church.
He did volunteer work with Faith in Action of the River Cities and Eastern Cabell County Humanities Organization (ECCHO). He also did Night Call Ministry at St. Mary’s Medical Center. He loved to play card games with his wife and others.
He had a passion for whittling wooden crosses. Gene Pierce, a former pastor of Bates Memorial Presbyterian Church and good friend, taught him how to carve a Celtic cross. He then proceeded to carve nearly 2,000 wooden crosses in his lifetime, giving them as gifts or at people’s requests.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Dorothy Maynard, his daughter Sandra Herrold and her husband Philip (Bud) Herrold, his grandchildren Rebecca Thomas and Joseph Thomas, two sisters, Nancy Klier and Dianne Henderson and one brother, Larry Maynard, and many nieces and nephews. A Service of Witness to the Resurrection will be held at Bates Memorial Presbyterian Church on Saturday, June 23rd at 1:00 PM. John Arbuckle, Authorized Lay Preacher from Edgewood Presbyterian Church and the Rev.
