Obituary for Richard “Dick” Slade Print Mr. Richard “Dick” Slade December 20, 1930 – October 20, 2018 Mr. Richard “Dick” Slade was born December 20, 1930 to Ira Hunt Slade, Sr. and Mary Dunlap Slade in Griffin, Georgia. Dick was a citizen of Griffin all his life and went through the Griffin school system graduating from Griffin High School in 1950. He was a four sport letterman and excelled in track.

After high school, Dick went to Florida State University on a track scholarship, but fell in love with the nationally renowned FSU Flying High Circus and gave up his track scholarship to be a circus performer. He was the trapeze catcher on the Flying High Aerobatic Team, but he also teamed for the Rollo Rollo Acrobatic Act, Double High Bar, Triple Trap, Quartet Adagio, Trampoline acts and Clowning. He worked his own way through college and enjoyed every minute of it including being an active member of Sigma Chi Fraternity.

Upon graduation, Dick joined the United States Army, went through basic training and became an instructor for International Morse Code. While in the service, Dick was a member of the Fort Jackson Golf Team and the Fort Jackson Football Team when his team competed against five other 3rd Army football teams at Fort Stewart, Georgia. His Team won the 3rd Army Championship.

Dick met his soulmate and the love of his life in April 1957 and didn’t want her to run away, so he married Myrna Anne Prothro on July 7, 1957 and considered himself the luckiest man on the face of this Earth! Dick and Anne had two daughters. Leigh Anne Slade, married to Randy P. Meyer, was born in May 1958 and has three children: Dixie Leigh (Steiner), Jo Anne (O’Brien) and Jonathan Louis Meyer.

Kelley Sunleaf Slade, married to Robert Rayford Browning Jr (Bobby) was born in November 1966 and has two sons, Robert Rayford Browning III (“Sport”) and Tyler Slade Browning. His two girls have blessed him and Anne with seven great grandchildren to date. Dick loved sports.

He was an avid golfer, dove and quail hunter, bass fisherman; he was a devoted tennis player and runner during his adult life and ran in and completed the inaugural marathon race at Callaway Gardens in the late ‘70’s. Dick has had his own vegetable garden for over 35 years and enjoyed sharing it with friends. He loved spending time with his two daughters doing all these things.

Dick began his vocational career in his family’s men’s and boys clothing business until 1972 when he went into the real estate business in Griffin. As a commercial Realtor, consultant and appraiser, Dick attained the CCIM designation which was similar to earning a doctorate degree in many other professions. He managed, listed and sold real estate some forty years.

Dick was a deacon in his church of the Baptist faith. He was mayor of Griffin and served the city of Griffin as an elected commissioner for eight years. He was extremely proud of that honor and served the city well.
