At the age of seven he began as a caddy at Seymour Country Club, then was a newspaper delivery boy, and eventually as a young lad worked his way into sales, selling salve and seeds. Following graduation from Seymour High School in 1955, he worked for a local tool and die company, Kinco. He opened his own business, Excel Tool & Die, in 1967 with his partner, Delbert Kilgas.
Excel Tool Inc continues in business today and has operated for 50 + years. Dick’s legacy continues as Excel Tool Inc is now owned by his sons, Jay and Craig Elmore. Over the years, Dick served his community on many Boards as an officer or member.
These organizations included Jackson County Chamber of Commerce, Jackson County Industrial Development Corporation, Seymour Country Club, American Mold Builders Association, Vincennes University, Seymour Boys & Girls Club, Elks Club, and Rotary. Dick was a member of Central Christian Church and served as an Elder, Board Chairman, Building Committee, Search Committee, Finance Committee, Youth Group leader, and Sunday School teacher. As community philanthropists, Dick and Patty proudly supported Girls Inc in securing a new facility for the young girls of Seymour in 2008.
Their philanthropic efforts benefit many organizations including United Way, Boys & Girls Club, Seymour Main Street, and their Church. Dick and Patty received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Boys and Girls Club of Seymour in 2003. They were also awarded the 2008 Citizenship Award from the Seymour Chamber of Commerce.
Dick was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing in local leagues with his friends and golfing vacations. He played at courses around the country and also St Andrews in Scotland. He was a great storyteller and his family, especially the grandchildren, were always entertained by his stories.
He enjoyed working with others and passing along his knowledge and expertise. Dick was always happy and honored to help others. He loved his family dearly and they loved him.
It brought him joy to have his family together and have the home filled with noise and laughter of children and grandchildren. Dick and his wife, Patty, were a dynamic duo. They were the epitome of marriage where two unite and become one, until death parted them.
Dick was loved beyond measure by his wife, children and grandchildren. He was surrounded by love. He commented many times what a blessed life he was graced to have lived.
