Cumberland – Richard S. Hilton, Sr., 71, of Cumberland passed away peacefully Wednesday, November 7, 2018 at the Philip Hulitar Inpatient Center, Providence. He was the devoted husband of 47 years to Marilyn A. (Lavoie) Hilton. Born in Pawtucket, a son of the late Charles Hilton, Sr. and the late Doris (Bryant) Hilton, he was a lifelong resident of Cumberland.

Mr. Hilton was the Director of Facilities and Operations for the Cumberland School Department for 6 years, retiring in 2012. He had also served in the same capacity for the Towns of Burrillville, Johnston and East Greenwich. He had previously worked as the Operations Manager for Ann & Hope in Cumberland.

A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, he served during the Vietnam War and was a member of Cumberland Post #14, American Legion. He served on the Cumberland Housing Authority for the past 22 years and was also one of the founding members of Valley Affordable Housing. He was an honorary life member of St. Thomas Council #1472, Knights of Columbus.

For 17 years, he was a call man on the Valley Falls Fire District, and had served as Chairman of the Board of Fire Wardens on the Valley Falls Fire District. He was a member of Cumberland Lodge #14, FOPA and was a PawSox season ticket holder for many years. He was the founder of the RI Association of School Maintenance Directors.

Besides his devoted wife, he is survived by his loving children, Lori Newman and her husband, Scott of Fairfax Station, VA and Richard S. Hilton, Jr. and his wife, Jacqueline of Cumberland; one brother, Charles Hilton, Jr. of Port St. Lucie, FL; and he was the devoted and beloved “Papa” to Harrison and Warner Newman, and Kate and Brooke Hilton. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Dorothea Hannigan.

His funeral will be held Saturday, November 10 at 9:30 A.M. from Bellows Funeral Chapel, 160 River Road, Lincoln with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 A.M. in St. Raymond’s Church, 1240 North Main Street, Providence. His burial, with military honors, will be in Newell Burying Ground, South Attleboro, MA. Relatives and friends are invited and may call Friday 4-7 P.M. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mr. Hilton’s memory to Hope Hospice and Palliative Care of Rhode Island, 1085 North Main Street, Providence, RI 02904-9826 would be appreciated.
