Richard Scott “Rick” Royer died unexpectedly on Wednesday, September 26, 2018, at Overland Park Regional Medical Center in Overland Park, Kan. , at the age of 67. Rick was born on February 10, 1951 in Abilene, Kan.

, to Jill Peck Royer and Robert H. Royer. He graduated from Abilene High School in 1969. Rick went on to attend the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kan.

, earning a bachelor’s degree in Education in December 1972. He married Stephanie D. Melander, his high school sweetheart, in 1971. Rick began working as a math teacher at Shawnee Mission East High School in Prairie Village, Kan.

, and subsequently retired from there in 2012 after 40 years of service. Rick is survived by his wife, Stephanie, of the home, mother-in-law, V. Chairyth Melander, Shawnee, Kan. , brothers Robert H. Royer, Jr. (Jo), Abilene, Kan.

, Michael J. Royer (Marla), Tulsa, Okla. , and Shannon Royer (Bill McTaggart), Lawrence, Kan. He was preceded in death by his parents, father-in-law D. Dale Melander, Shawnee, Kan.

, and brother, Charles P. (Chuck) Royer, Houston, Texas Funeral services are scheduled at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 2, at Lutheran Church of the Resurrection, 9100 Mission Road, Prairie Village, Kan. , with a reception to follow.

Visitation is planned 6-7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 1, at the church. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Rick’s life.
