Obituary for Richard Wesley Wright Weddington, N.C. – Richard Wesley “Dick” Wright, 88, passed away at his home on Monday, September 10, 2018. He was born on August 19, 1930 in Auburn, New York, the son of the late Fredric Wesley and Marian Van Giesen Wright. He graduated from Mynderse Academy in Seneca Falls, NY and attended SUNYOswego until he was called into military service in 1952.

After serving in the United States Air Force for 11 years, he returned home to begin his career in insurance. Richard was hard-working and devoted to his family, his country, his work, and his church. However, his passion was the program of Alcoholics Anonymous.

During his nearly 53 years of sobriety, he attended meetings 7 days a week helping countless others to find and stay on the road to recovery. He was easy to spot around town in his bright red truck with two American flags flapping in the breeze, almost certainly heading to a meeting or somewhere to offer encouragement to another, always with a smile and a handshake or a hug for everyone he met. Richard is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Barbara Hansen Wright and his daughters, Carolyn Wright Smith, of Waynesville, NC and Marilyn Wright Everhart and her husband, Kenneth, of Raleigh and his 6 grandchildren, Mary Katherine Smith, Ethan Smith (and fiancée Mary Anne Allen), Sarahanne Smith of Charlotte, Abby Everhart, Kyle Everhart, and Hunter Everhart, of Raleigh.

He also leaves behind his sister and brother-in-law, Paula and Milan Durgala, nephew Paul Durgala, niece Ellen Si (Larry), and their girls Anna, Linnea, Naomi and Elizabeth. Missing him terribly is his devoted dachshund of 16 years, Sunny. Left to be guided and supported by his memory are countless people that he served and walked along side in his AA community.

It was his desire for those whose lives he touched to continue to “carry the message” of Strength and Hope to others one day at a time. A celebration of his life will be held at 2:00 pm Friday, September 21, 2018 at Weddington United Methodist Church in Weddington, N.C.
