Rita Lee O’Brien (Kiper), 67 years young, passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by family. She fought an epic battle against pancreatic cancer, beat the odds and along the way proved that prayers can be answered and that doctors’ predictions are not always accurate. On January 31, 2019 she won her fight against cancer and received her ultimate healing.

She was a generous and loving mother and wife who spoiled her grandchildren to no end. Sweet with a side of zest, she had a knack for telling it like it was. A natural born caregiver, Rita began her career in nursing before dedicating her time to raising her beautiful children and creating a loving and welcoming home.

With her adventurous spirit, Rita lived life to the fullest. She and her husband Mark spent the best years of their life boating around the world’s most beautiful beaches, visiting all 50 states, more than 50 countries and traveling to all seven continents. She found joy in beautiful sunsets, gardening, preparing delicious food and the company of good friends; but her greatest love was her family.

She grew up in Saint Matthews and cherished her time at Our Lady of Lourdes. Her favorite memories of her childhood were spending summers in Leitchfield with her family. Rita Lee is survived by her loving, adoring and devoted husband of 44 years, her two children, five grandchildren, two brothers and nine nieces and nephews.

Waiting for her in heaven were her parents, sister, niece and sister-in-law. The family will receive friends at Ratterman’s in Middletown from 12-5 p.m. on February 4 and a celebration of Rita’s life will be held at 10 a.m. on February 5 at Our Lady of Lourdes. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network at pancan.org/donate.
