Obituary for Robert L. Coggins Robert L. (Bob) Coggins, 98, Passed away peacefully in Arlington on Saturday, September 1, 2018. Bob was born in Handley on August 10, 1920, as the youngest of eight brothers and sisters. Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Molly; his parents; his son-in-law, Steve Blackburn; and all of his other siblings.
Bob served in the U.S. Army from 1940-1945. During WWII, he was assigned to the 2nd Infantry Division as a machine gun platoon leader. Staff Sergeant Coggins entered France wading through Omaha Beach on D-Day+1 as a member of the invasion force and fought in the Battle of Normandy (Invasion), Battle of Northern France (Belgium), Battle of the Bulge, and Battle of the Rhineland (Germany).
His combat-related decorations include the Bronze Star (heroic action), Purple Heart (combat wounded), and Combat Infantry Badge (personal ground combat against enemy fire). Only if pressed hard would he talk about his war years. The only good thing he said about that time was that his loved .
45 caliber Thompson sub-machine gun had saved his life more than once. After the war, Bob had a 40+ year career working as a long-haul truck driver for his life-long friend, Andy Carlegis. Even though gone much of the time during those years, Bob was a strong and loving family man.
When he finally retired he really enjoyed just sitting (sleeping? ) in his recliner and watching the old TV western shows he had missed over the years. He well deserved the rest and sleep.
Bob married the love of his life, Molly Sanchez, in 1943, while on leave from the Army. This was the pairing of a more-than-beautiful young woman and a striking young man. They had a long and wonderful marriage of over 67 years until Molly’s death in 2011.
Bob and Molly had four loved children: Rebecca and husband, Jim ton, Bobbie Sue, (deceased, 2000), Michael (deceased, 1995) and Delores (husband, Steve, deceased 2018). Bob (and Molly) have nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Bob is truly an example of one of the news-worthy “Greatest Generation” persons.
He scrabbled and made do whatever it took during the hard depression times of the ’30’s and he entered the Army in 1940 when we needed it most. He fought across France, Belgium, and Nazi Germany until the European war ended, and he was in staging ground readying for the invasion of Japan when WWII ended. Never saying much about his war-time actions, his deep and life-long love for his wife, Molly and children was always first for him.
