Robert L Corson Jr. July 22, 1933 – January 10, 2019 Send Flowers Send Sympathy Gifts Sign Guestbook| View Guest Book Entries| Send Private Condolences| Send Sympathy Card Robert Lore Corson Jr., 85, a lifelong resident of Millville, NJ, passed away after a courageous battle with ALS on Thursday night at home surrounded by his loving family. Bob was a proud graduate of Millville High School, class of 1950. He then attended the University of Pennsylvania/Wharton School of Business where he was affiliated with the fraternity Pi Kappa Alpha; he further continued his education, obtaining a Master’s Degree of Arts from Glassboro State College.
After college, Bob worked for 5 years, full-time in his father’s downtown clothing store on High and Pine Street in Millville. Later, Bob worked at Corson’s clothing store every Saturday, giving his mother a day off; he was a loyal son. Bob enjoyed decorating the windows in Corson’s Store front and often joked that he was the Vice President of the family’s business.
Additionally, Bob, known as Apache Chief, was a counselor at Camp Hollybrook and enjoyed working with Millville’s famous artist, Pat Witt. Together, Pat and Bob provided young campers with a wonderful arts and crafts program throughout many summers. After Pat Witt left Camp Hollybrook to open the Barn Studio of Art, Bob became the director of the arts program at the summer camp for over 10 years.
Pat and Bob developed an amazing friendship, and Bob studied art at the “the Barn” with Pat for over 45 years. Besides studying with Pat, Bob also studied art at the Academy of Art in Philadelphia. Well-known in the Downtown Arts District as an artist, Bob was an advocate for the arts and was one of the original Board Member of the RRCA.
Many will remember Bob for his dedicated work in the field of education. Starting as a math and science teacher at the Seabrook School for a few years, and then subsequently taking a teaching position with the Millville School System, Bob committed himself to 48 years of service. He filled the roles of teacher, guidance counselor, and vice principal of Memorial High School.
Thousands of children and a great number of colleagues, benefited from his caring and considerate nature. He was truly an icon in the Millville School District, inspiring people through his sincerity and upstanding character. In addition to being an artist and educator, Bob served on the Juvenile Justice Committee in Millville for over 25 years.
He was also an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Millville, serving on the Board of Trustees, and many committees, including the financial committee. Ushering and the church’s historian were additional roles he filled as a life-long member. His hobbies included gardening, traveling, antiquing, reading, going to museums, and enjoying the beach in Cape May–ALL DAY!
A Philadelphia Phillies fan, a great conversationalist, an excellent listener, Bob was involved in many facets of life, but above all his interests, his family came first. His family was most important in his life. They benefited from his many positive attributes as he was a giving man; we will forever cherish his wisdom, admire his grace, and aspire to emulate the many amazing traits of his character.
Bob is survived by his his devoted and loving wife of 38 years, Paula (Holmes) Corson, three sons: Robert Corson III (Allison) (their daughter, Natalie), James “Hawkie” Corson (Susan) (their daughter, Emily), and Andrew “Falcon” Corson, three daughters: Barbara Corson (John Gray) (Barbara’s sons, Dane and Drew Andersen), Beth Rehmann (Tim) (their daughter Savannah), and Amy Danner (Zach) (and a baby due in May), brother, Roland Corson (Marge) (and their 3 children: Chrissie Tice, Patty Robbins, and Doug Corson), and many great-nieces and great-nephews. Relatives and friends can be received at the First United Methodist Church in Millville between 10:00am – 12:00pm on Thursday, January 17, 2019. A service will follow at 12:00pm, and the interment will take place at Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent either to the Barn Studio of Art (nonprofit) OR the Robert L. Corson Jr. Scholarship for a graduating student of Millville Senior High School who possesses Bob’s passion for the arts or for art education.
