Obituary of Robert Scott Robert D. “Bob” Scott, Sr. January 7, 1928-February 3, 2019 Fort Montgomery, NY Robert D. “Bob” Scott, Sr. passed away in his home surrounded by his loving family, on Sunday February 3, 2019. He was born on January 7, 1928 in Cornwall, NY. Has was the son of the late Ellsworth Scott and Alyce Morganthalar Scott.
He is pre-deceased by his loving wife Alice (nee Rositzke) Scott, son, Robert D Scott Jr., and brother, Charles David “Dave” Scott. Bob was educated in Fort Montgomery and graduated Highland Falls High School in 1945. In the early days he worked as Treasurer from 1947-1950 at the USMA Cadet Restaurant alongside his father and grandfather.
He enlisted within the United States Army in 1950. He was a Sergeant First Class, member of Company-E 5th Cavalry Regiment-1st Cavalry Division. Bob was wounded in action on February 15, 1951 and again on May 3, 1951.
Their company was ordered to get out of combat and retreat to safety. Out of 84 soldiers, only 12 made it out, the other 72 were either gravely wounded, captured, or died honorably. Pop often wondered why he was spared when he spoke of that battle.
From the outpouring of love, we have received in the first 24 hrs. it is evident there were so many reasons! Later, Bob was promoted to Master Sergeant.
He was awarded five major Combat Ribbons, a Combat Infantry Badge, the Bronze Star, Oak Leaf Cluster and two Purple Hearts for his meritorious and heroic achievements. After proudly serving his country he took a position within the Director of Engineering and Housing at USMA. He later retired in 1988, after 33 years of civil service.
Robert D. Scott was one of the most patriotic Americans you could ever have known. He never stopped battling for the rights and needs of his fellow Veterans, he campaigned and endlessly fundraised for any organization he belonged to! Pop had a penchant for today’s young soldiers, he worried about them.
Bob knew firsthand what war could do and he loved to share the stories of survival. Listening to him he never seemed scared, his message was clear, it was an honor to serve your country! He was Past Commander and honored lifetime member of the Purple Heart Association, Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign War, Life member of D.A.V., Life member and former Chief of the Fort Montgomery Fire Department, Life member of the Orange County Firemen’s Association, and Member of the Fort Montgomery Battle Site Association.
As an Honorary Member of Rolling Thunder Chapter 3, he really looked forward to the ride through Highland Falls where he could wear his vest with upmost pride! Pop happily lived on his family’s property located on Scott’s Circle for his entire life. He was always proud to announce how he had lived to see five generations enjoy his slice of paradise!
If you ever got his tour you would know what we mean. He got such joy out of running his little farm raising pigs, goats, chickens, amongst many other types of animals. He was an enthusiast of wildlife so not limited to having only domestic or farm animals, a stray deer could occasionally find a permanent home at Scotts Circle too.
Later, only to be seen with its signature red bow greeting the kids at the old Carvel stand! Keeping with his love for the land, he was extremely proud of his Archeological finds as a young boy; some very historical in nature which are located in the Bear Mountain Trail Side Museum. This interest stayed with him long into adulthood and over the years made its way into many local children’s classrooms.
He would bring flint, arrowheads, and oyster shells for the kids could keep while sharing his love for American History and especially his beloved American Indians. He leaves behind his cherished son, Richard E. Scott, Daughter in law AnnMarie (Ryan) Scott; His beloved grandchildren, Tierney E. (Scott) Kain, her husband Jonathan Kain, Richard D. Scott and Amy Hay all whom he loved so much. He will be sincerely missed by his beloved Scott Family, Nieces, and Nephews and many friends and comrades.
He had a special place in his heart for his adopted family, the Ryan’s. For those honorary members, he will forever be loved and remembered as a Dad, Pop, Grandpop, & Uncle Bob. His heartfelt actions, words of wisdom, and special sense of humor will live in all of our hearts forever!
Visitation will be held from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Friday, February 8th, 2019 at William F. Hogan Funeral Home, 135 Main Street, Highland Falls, NY. A Funeral Mass will take place Saturday, February 9th, 2019 at Blessed Sacrament Chapel in Fort Montgomery, NY at 12:30PM. Cremation will take place at Cedar Hill Crematory, Middle Hope, NY.
