December 5, 1918 – February 23, 2019 Robert William Smith, Sr., 100, formerly of Vancouver, Washington passed away in his sleep at the home of his daughter, Wanda Jennings in Springfield, Or. Robert was born and raised in Linn County, the son of Elizabeth (Brodie) Smith and Walter Glasgow Smith. He had three siblings, Marguerite, Bernita, and John.

He spent his youth farming on The Coon Farm belonging to his sister and brother-in-law Marguerite and Herold Coon. On April 29, 1939, he married Betty Marie Koontz. They had three children, Betty Jean, Marlene and Robert, Jr. “Bob”.

The family relocated to Vancouver, Washington. Robert worked in the shipyards until enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1944. He served in The Philippines.

He was a heavy duty truck driver. He was also an expert marksman with various types of weapons. Among many medals, he received The Bronze Star.

He was honorably discharged in 1946. After his divorce, he met Bernice Davis Robinson. They were married November 12, 1949.

They spent 70 years happily married. Robert became father to Bernice’s children, Wanda and Roy. He later adopted Roy.

He was an expert welder and diesel mechanic. He worked for Asbury Trucking Co. for many years until they closed. After that, he worked at a company that sent him to Maine ever summer.

He and Bernice would motor across the U.S. with their 5th wheel enjoying all the sights. The destination was Presque Isle, Maine. He worked on heavy trucks and equipment.

He retired at age 62. From then on, it was fun, fishing, and camping trips. He leaves behind his wife Bernice, children Betty Jean, Marlene (John), Bob (Linda) and Wanda; seven grandchildren, many great grandchildren, as well as four nephews and their families.

He was preceded by his parents Elizabeth and Walter Smith, sisters Marguerite (Herold) Coon, and Bernita (Gene) Crook, brother John Smith, son Roy Smith, and grandson Robbie Smith. The family wishes to thank Cascade Hospice, especially his caregiver, Esther and his nurse Kevin for their special care and kindness. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, March 9, at 2:00PM at Oakville Presbyterian Church.
