Obituary for Mr. Roby Jennings Atkinson A visitation for Mr. Roby Jennings Atkinson, 97, will be held from 5:00 until 7:00 on Monday, May 28, 2018 at Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 o’clock on Tuesday, May 29, 2018 at Westview Memorial Park Cemetery, with The Rev. Dr. Greg Boyd officiating.

Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is serving the family. Roby passed away peacefully on Friday, May 25, 2018. Born June 7, 1920, he was the son of the late Liza Harding and Simmons Lee Atkinson.

He was a veteran of World War II and worked at Sonoco Products for 42 years. After retirement he traveled throughout the world serving as a lay missionary for the Southern Baptist Foreign Mission Board. His hobby was wood working.

He spent many hours a day building outdoor furniture that can be seen in the yards of families all across the Pee Dee. He was an avid reader and during his quiet time he could be found with a book in his hand. He loved people and never met a stranger.

Roby is survived by his wife of 66 years, Shirley King Atkinson; son, Richard J. (Carolyn) Atkinson, Hartsville, SC; daughter, Joan (Scott) Pennstrom, Florence, SC; grandsons, Joshua Atkinson of Nevada and John (Ashton) Pennstrom of Florence; a great-granddaughter, Anna Lee Pennstrom; sister, Lou Sowell. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial to All Saints’ Day School Endowment Fund, 1425 Cherokee Road, Florence,SC 29501; First Baptist Church, 104 E. Home Ave. , Hartsville, SC 29550: Soup Kitchen, Wesley United Methodist Church, 145 E. College Ave.
