Obituary for Rosa Tomarchio Rosa “Rose” Tomarchio, passed away peacefully at her home on January 17, 2019 at the age of 91. She was the daughter of Italian immigrants Sebastiano and Angela Tomarchio and was the last surviving sibling of their nine children. Born in Baltimore City, she had been a Carroll County resident since 1976 when she built her home in Taylorsville.
Rose took great pride in her immaculately kept and beautiful home surrounded by wooded acres and a nearby pond. Rose was very fit and active and no stranger to a rake, mower or garden tool and could be seen working in her yard. She continued to do so late in life until health issues prevented it.
Rose enjoyed crocheting and creating beautiful embroidery. Her talents included baking wonderful Italian cookies and pastries enjoyed by all her family and friends. Her recipes were cherished ones passed on from her mother through many generations of family in Sicily.
Throughout her life she was a dedicated worker with employers that included Westinghouse, a realtor for a Carroll County firm, Evergreen Memorial Gardens and South Carroll High School’s cafeteria. She worked part time at the school from 2004 to 2010 before her full retirement at age 82. Rose enjoyed her interactions and banter with students often offering them advice and sharing her own life lessons.
An impressive accomplishment in her working years was running her own business, Bloomingdale Wee Wash It, from 1954 until it was sold in 1968. It served customers in Baltimore’s Walbrook Junction neighborhood. In addition to the pressures of managing the business, it was physically demanding work.
Rose pushed though during her long days at the laundry. It was never like her to slow down. Rose was a vibrant and outspoken woman.
She had a commanding presence and an outgoing and feisty personality. The day before her death as her hospital bed was being delivered and maneuvered into the room, she quipped through half opened eyes “You better not mess up anything”. It brought smiles to her daughter’s face recognizing her mother was still in charge despite her condition.
Rose is survived by her loving family, daughter Angela Carlson and her husband Christopher, three grandchildren, four great grandchildren, her companion Hank Hahn and many nieces and nephews. She was a communicant of St. Peter the Apostle Church in Union Bridge and devout in her faith. Rose was predeceased in death by her husband of 14 years William Groomes in 1961.
