HAMILTON – Russel Owen Burt, 83 of Hamilton passed away Friday, June 1, 2018 at his home of natural causes surrounded by his family. He was born May 15, 1935 in Deer Lodge, MT the son of Alta and Earl Burt. Russ was raised and educated in Deer Lodge and graduated from Powell County High School in 1954.

Maryann Hogan asked him out when she was a sophomore and he was a senior at Powell County High School. On February 7, 1959, Russel married Maryann. They made their way to Hamilton where they built their home and raised their children; Becky, Pam, Rusty and Susan.

Russ’s first career was at the Anaconda Lumber Company where he was the youngest manager ever at that time. He enjoyed his second career as a custom cabinet maker. Russ and Maryann owned and operated The Carpenter’s Apron together.

As life progressed he began his final career as an instructor in cooking at the Trapper Creek Job Corps. Russ loved both cooking and imparting his wisdom. Russ loved the great Montana outdoors and never turned down a chance to hunt for elk with his son Rusty, his nephew Earl Burt, and the Hogan Brothers.

He loved his days fishing the Clark Fork River by the Hogan Ranch in Gold Creek and the Bitterroot River. Russ also loved his weekly poker game with his friends. He was a proud lifetime member of the Elks.

For many years he was the cook for the many fund raisers. Russ was preceded in death by his mother, Alta Burt Nelson; his father, Earl Burt; and his brothers, Clayton and Everett Burt. He is survived by his loving wife, Maryann, of Hamilton; 4 children, Becky Brough and husband Tim of Hamilton, Pam Van Syoc and husband Jon of Casper, WY, Rusty Burt and wife Chris of Hamilton and Susan Burt of Marion, MT; 7 grandchildren, Chris Van Syoc of Bridgeport, TX, Mary Ann Van Syoc of Winter Park, CO, Tim Brough, Jr., Maggie Brough, Cody Brough, Alycia Burt and Ty Burt all of Hamilton; 1 great-grandchild, Olivia Brough of Hamilton; his brother, Gene Burt of Avon, MT and nephews, Earl Burt of Bremerton, WA, Dan Burt of Deer Lodge and Tom Burt of Missoula; and niece, Bonnie Burt of California.

Visitation will be held on Monday, June 4, 2018 from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. at the Daly-Leach Chapel with Vigil Services following at 7:00 P.M. Honorary pallbearers will be Chris Van Syoc, Tim Brough Jr., Cody Brough, Ty Burt, Jon Van Syoc and Tim Brough, Sr. Condolences may be left for the family at www. dalyleachchapel.com.
