S. Irene Gerst, age 100, of Wapello and formerly of Oakville, died Thursday evening, October 25, 2018, at the Wapello Specialty Care. The daughter of Edward and Anna VanSickle Pontzius, she was born on November 29, 1917 in Wapello. Irene married Eugene ‘Ted’ Gerst on December 9, 1936 in Bloomfield.

He preceded her in death on October 17, 2005. Irene graduated from Wapello High School in 1936. They farmed in the Oakville area for 45 years.

She was a member of the Oakville United Methodist Church and had been a 4 H Leader for many years. Irene was involved with various community projects and activities. Her family includes two sons, Ernie Gerst and Kenny & Carol Gerst both of Wapello; a daughter, Charlotte & Marion Brown of Eldridge; 9 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; 2 step grandchildren; 15 great great grandchildren; and 4 step great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Eugene ‘Ted’; a daughter-in-law, Judy Gerst; two sisters, Verlee Gerst and Lucille Evans; and a brother Arthur Pontzius. The family will meet friends from 4:00 to 7:00 PM on Sunday, October 28, 2018, at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello. The funeral ceremony for Irene Gerst will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday, October 29, 2018, at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home with Rev.

Carl Benge officiating and Pastor Steven Parker and Stan Wood providing special music. Burial will follow at the Edwards Cemetery, rural Oakville with a lunch to follow at the Oakville Community Building. Memorial gifts will benefit the Oakville United Methodist Church and Great River Hospice.
